Overview:

There are multiple openings with the Yakima County Public Services, County Road Department. This is an intermittent, on-call, extra help, temporary position. The purpose of this position is to perform routine activities related to maintaining roads and facilities, building and surveying County owned roads. Performs other tasks as required. Work schedule may be scheduled up to 8 hours or more per day.

Responsibilities:

[Essential Duties:]{.underline}

Incumbent will perform a variety of routine, manual labor activities based on the work assignment. Assignments may include one or more of the following:

 

Maintaining County buildings, right-of-ways, water systems and facilities such as clearing brush piles, picking up litter, cleaning culvert pipes, repairing fences and other minor roadway repair and directing traffic.

 

Assisting Survey and Road Construction personnel in survey operations, assisting Road Construction Inspector in monitoring road/bridge building contractors to ensure compliance with specifications by recording amount and types of construction materials being incorporated into the project.

 

Assisting ER&R staff in the cleaning and routine maintenance of equipment and County facilities. Activities include: washing vehicles/equipment, performing minor equipment repairs and grounds maintenance (litter pickup, mowing, trimming).

 

Assisting Engineering staff in the filing of documents, organization and manipulation of data and data files, collecting field data and performing office calculations

 

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential duties of the job.

Required:

  • Valid WA State Driver's License and proof of insurance, if requested.

Preferred:

  • Skills in operating basic hand tools, lawn and facility maintenance machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to take direction.
  • Skill in working with others.
  • Ability to work independently as directed.
  • Experience in directing traffic; operating grounds keeping equipment and/or forklift

Equipment Used: Computer, calculator, forklift, survey equipment, grounds maintenance equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters and hand tools such as sledgehammers, personal protective equipment, two way radios, passenger/light truck vehicles.
