MECHANIC - CLASS A

Primary Function:

To engage in repairing, adjusting, servicing, inspecting, and cleaning

school buses, automobiles, trucks, and other school division motor vehicles.

Qualifications:

  1. Is at least 21 years of age and meets the requirements of good

physical health and can perform moderate to heavylifting up to

50 pounds.

  1. Possesses a high school diploma.

  2. Possesses a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License (Class B at

minimum) with school bus and passenger bus endorsements OR

successfully obtain Virginia CDL with correct endorsements within

one year of employment.

  1. Possesses prior successful experience as an automobile and/or truck

fleet mechanic for both diesel and gasoline engines, as well as certification

as an official inspection mechanic by the VirginiaDepartment of

State Police.

  1. Possesses the ability to stand for extended periods of time, push or pull

objects, walk, reach (above shoulders, overhead, and horizontally), and

operate equipment and tools while being subject to environmental

conditions, hazards, atmospheric conditions, noise, chemicals, infrequently,

oils, and fumes.

REPORTS TO:CHIEF MECHANICAND SUPERVISOR OF TRANSPORTATION

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Examines, vehicles and discusses findings with head mechanic.

  2. Plans work procedures, using technical manuals, computer diagnostic

equipment and experience.

  1. Raises vehicles using hydraulic jacks or hoist to gain access to mechanical

units bolted to underside of vehicles.

  1. Removes units, such as engine, transmission, or differential, using wrenches,

portable air hoist, and transmission jack.

  1. Disassemble units and inspect parts of wear, using micrometers, calipers,

and thickness gauges.

  1. Overhauls or replaces carburetors, fuel injectors, turbos, blowers,

generators, distributors, starters, alternators.

  1. Repair or replace engine parts, such as,pistons,rods, gears, valves

and bearings, using mechanic's had tools.

  1. Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.

  2. Recline and adjust brakes, alignfront ends, repair or replace shock

absorbers, and solder minor leaks in radiators.

  1. Mend damaged bodies and fenders by hammering out or filling in

dents and welding broken parts.

  1. Replace and adjustheadlights, and installs and repairs accessories,

such as heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.

  1. Makes minor repairs to vehicles along highways, such as replacing

spark plugs, batteries and light bulbs, and connecting loose wires.

  1. Assist head mechanic in maintaininga clean and safe workshop.

  2. On call 24 hour each day; serve as an emergencybus driver and/or

bus aide as needed.

  1. Assist with inclement weatherroad condition checks and other weather-relatedduties as needed.

  2. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Terms of employment: 12 months per year
