WSP are searching for a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) - Principal/Associate Consultant to join either our Manchester or Liverpool office. The successful candidate will undertake the role of Regional BNG Lead for the North West, working alongside our other regional BNG leads to drive training and upskilling, whilst providing expertise to projects across a range of sectors.

  • Acting as a Regional lead for BNG within the North-West. You will work alongside our other Regional leads to help grow our teams capabilities and knowledge of BNG, providing training and mentorship and driving our BNG expertise by example.

  • Actively managing and inputting to a range of projects across a variety of sectors to help implement BNG. This will include providing BNG expertise to Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and opportunities for delivering BNG at a landscape scale.

  • Input into client proposals for biodiversity advisory services and assessments of large and complex developments, often in collaboration with other disciplines and our Natural Capital team.

  • Undertaking field surveys across a range of project sites throughout the North West and UK.

  • Undertaking BNG calculations using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric (and other client specific BNG toolkits), using UKHab survey data.

  • Input into a range of ecological deliverables including: BNG assessment reports, Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans, strategic BNG plans, metrics, and GIS shapefiles.

  • Have direct Client liaison and actively grow BNG services to both internal and external clients.

  • Work closely with WSP’s Nature Advisory team, making connections to strategic biodiversity and Natural Capital work and discussing the regional BNG strategy in the context of the national strategy.

  • Undertake project management for a range of projects of varying sizes and sectors.

  • Develop habitat creation plans to enhance biodiversity.

  • Provide training and CPD events to our internal teams as well as external clients, with opportunities to attend and speak at conferences and events.

  • An appropriate academic qualification in a related discipline and are member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management at an appropriate level (mentoring is available for upgrade to Full Membership).

  • Experience and understanding of: UKHab habitat types and terminology; use of Metrics to undertake biodiversity net gain assessment. Botanical field skills highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of relevant policy and legislation and differing approaches to BNG assessment.

  • Experience of co-ordinating ecological projects, include awareness of budget control.

  • Good GIS skills.

  • The ability to work in a team of ecologists and environmental professionals.

  • A desire to develop your core ecological and consultancy skills in a supportive environment.

  • Experience of habitat creation and preparation of habitat management plans.

  • A desire to drive upskilling of junior members of staff, providing mentoring and guidance.

  • Experience of engaging with and driving conversations with clients and statutory bodies.
