Marine Biological Laboratory Material Handler in Woods Hole, Massachusetts

JOB SUMMARY:

The Material Handler will be responsible for moving boxes to and from the MBL warehouse and assist in the MBL Shipping & Receiving Dept.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Under supervision, move materials for labs to and from the warehouse.2. When not involved with material moving, assist in the MBL Shipping &Receiving Dept.3. Receive and document receipt of all incoming packages and freight utilizing software and palm pilots. Deliver goods to MBL destinations in a timely manner.4. Prepare and document delivery of outgoing packages and freight. Assist MBL personnel in the use of Ship Request software and the selection of carriers and preparation of manifests or other associated paperwork.5. Ability to operate a forklift (forklift certified) onsite training is available.6. Loading and unloading of trucks as deliveries arrive.7. Receive in and inspect all packages to ensure no damages and compare packing list to actual purchase order for accuracy.8. Provide assistance to other departments as directed by Supervisor.9. Serve as Category I Essential Personnel during emergencies. Expected to be available to prepare for a storm, provide facility protection during the storm, and take the first steps towards restoring normal operations.10.Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or equivalent.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to follow instructions and maintain a high level of productivity. Worker must be computer literate, able to learn Shipping & Receiving software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Worker must be forklift certified within the first thirty (30 days) MBL is able to train the right person. Post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and drug test required. Worker must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with favorable driving record. Must be available to work a flexible schedule including weekends and some evenings.This position requires very heavy work (exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Worker must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, use fingertips, grasp, lift, talk, hear, taste/smell, perceive attributes of objects by touch, and perform repetitive motions. Worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position is subject to outside environmental conditions with no effective protection from weather. Worker is subject to noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
