TITLE: Laboratory Assistant II DEPARTMENT: Laboratory Services REPORTS TO: Laboratory Services Manager PRIMARY OBJECTIVE/SUMMARY: The Lab Assistant II performs phlebotomy, instrument maintenance, daily QC, urinanalysis testing, 24-hour urine processing, and processing of blood/body fluid specimens. Duties also include patient education and teaching- which includes teaching self-catherterization and self-injection, laboratory procedures - which include catherterization of patients, injections, and bladder scans, communicating effectively with patients and all member of the Metro Urology team. The Lab Assistant II ensures compliance with all CLIA, OSHA and federal guidelines. RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs routine office procedures and testing in a safe and effective manner. Performs data entry and documentation in an accurate, compete and timely manner. Performs daily laboratory draws and injections. Documents observations, actions and patient outcomes Effectively communicates on the phone and face to face by being courteous, prompt and polite. Maintains a constant awareness of policies and procedures. Perform all maintenance on urine analyzers and autoclave. Orders and maintains testing supplies and laboratory medications. Identifies common and recurring needs of the patient. Responsible for keeping all clinical areas clean and properly stocked. Indentifies patient education needs and provide information. Handles information with discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times. Knowledgeable in appointment scheduling and current insurance information. Coordinates and consults with Laboratory Lead and Clinical Services Manager regarding lab related issues. Comply with all OSHA, CLIA, and federal regulations. Other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: Ability to maintain a professional appearance and attitude with staff, managers, directors, providers, vendors and patients Demonstrates flexibility with time and hours based on the clinical and laboratory needs Ability to work independently Ability to analyze work methods to effectively organize work, multitask, make improvements, and problem solve Ability to effectively communicate and work efficiently with laboratory manager, laboratory director, management, providers, staff and patients Supportive of the goals and objectives of Metro Urology Committed member of the Metro Urology team Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality EDUCATION/TRAINING/LICENSURE/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assistant Certified Medical Assistant peferred 2 + years experience preferred Computer skills to include, navigation, keyboarding, Microsoft Office Word. Knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) products such as Orchard, NextGen, and UroChart preferred. EQUIPMENT USED: Computer keyboard and monitor, calculator, writing utensils, telephone, copy/fax machine, and histology equipment use for testing and procedures. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires standing for long periods of time while working in an office/laboratory environment. Some bending and stretching required. Ability to lift 20 to 50 pounds. Working in a fast paced environment. Manual dexterity required for use of calculator and computer keyboard. WORKING CONDITIONS: Fast paced lab and clinical environment.
