American Tower Director Operational Tax in Woburn, Massachusetts

The Team

We are seeking a Director to lead American Tower’s U.S. Tower division’s Operational Tax team. The team is responsible for all U.S. Tower division activities related to property, sales and use, and withholding taxes, and for risk management of landlords’ taxes. Day to day you willmeet the requirements for tax compliance in all relevant jurisdictions and minimize the Company’s tax burden through the most effective and efficient means possible. You will oversee one of the Company’s largest direct expense line items and manage the associated risks. The Tax team represents the Company during significant multimillion dollar tax audit negotiations. You may engage outside professionals for designated tasks in specific areas and will manage those relationships. As a Director, you will partner cross-functionally to ensure financial obligations are satisfied and the U.S. Tower division remains tax compliant by regularly engaging with Legal and Accounting department and Corporate division employees, but also partnering with other internal teams on tax-related items. This will include directly engaging with customers and governing authorities.

What You Can Offer Us

  • Oversee all aspects of the property, sales and use, and withholding tax compliance processes including, but not limited to, returns, assessment notices, appeals, and bill payments; identify issues and trends and explain variances to budgets.

  • Research, develop, and implement robust tax savings strategies.

  • Represent the Company during, and manage internal and external, tax audits; negotiate audit settlements as required.

  • Review and assert compliant applicable tax returns and information prepared to ensure returns, renditions, and tax bills are filed timely and accurately.

  • Prepare and review balance sheets and income statements for unit value or central returns.

  • Design and implement process improvements to maximize tax compliance reporting and operations efficiencies.

  • As a Director, you are responsible for the recruitment, performance management, and career development of tax professionals leading their own respective areas. You will be expected to cultivate a collaborative team dynamic that enables us to meet our business objectives.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area of study required; advanced degree or CPA preferred.

  • A minimum of 10 years of property tax and/or sales and use tax experience required, with an understanding and working knowledge of both preferred.

  • A minimum of 7 years of management experience required .

  • Telecommunications or wireless industry experience preferred.

  • Approximately 10% travel may be required in support of the position’s responsibilities.

  • Strong organization, planning, and project management skills; ability to prioritize tasks for self and team to meet requirements and deadlines.

  • Ability to work with different functional groups and levels of employees to achieve results effectively and professionally.

  • Strong leadership skills; ability to drive and motivate a team to achieve results.
