Job Description

 

The Parker Lord APS Division is looking for an Application Engineer I with a mechanical equipment background.  This opening is for either of our technical sites in Cary, NC or Wixom, MI.  This role is primarily in a laboratory environment, designing and running system-level tests with meter-mix-dispense equipment for chemical adhesives.  Secondarily, this role may directly and independently interface with customers and travel domestically.  This application engineer will be responsible for internal lab work, report communication, analysis of results, and solving system level mechanical equipment challenges.

Application Engineering Specific Duties: Designing, running, troubleshooting mechanical equipment to dispense chemical adhesives.  Multiple meter-mix-dispense (MMD) equipment systems are currently run within the team.  This role will take ownership of existing equipment and new systems. Designing, running, troubleshooting test methods to investigate chemical adhesive properties during customer dispensing.  Partnering with internal chemical product developers and external equipment suppliers to investigate aspects of the adhesive important during customer high speed manufacturing. Interfaces with internal technical teams, external equipment suppliers, and key customers. Communicates frequently and professionally via written and verbal analysis and results. General Duties: Operate in a safe, high quality, and ethical manner while following Parker LORD policies. Able to collaboratively work as part of a multidisciplinary, global project team to develop and accomplish goals and objectives. Routine and non-routine technical lab assignments of moderate to low complexity and variety; frequently make decisions independently. Determine appropriate technical approach, follow accepted procedures, develop new procedures and communicate conclusions/recommendations in an effective manner. Oversee application engineering equipment, involved in the specification and purchase of new equipment. Conduct training for staff as needed. Support Innovation efforts by being the technical point of contact for certain application engineering equipment aspects. Support quality teams by investigating root causes, corrective actions, and test methods to address critical performance characteristics of chemical materials. May require travel up to 20% within the US.  International trips are unlikely.

Possess strong attention to detail. Ability to safely work in a chemical and mechanical laboratory environment. Possess good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to apply basic statistics and interpret and communicate results. Ability to utilize computerized equipment and computer software packages including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Word, and SAP. Visual acuity to read and understand chemical container labels. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Impact:  Technical lead on low complexity, short term projects.  Leads portions of projects as a team member. Failure to achieve goals can normally be overcome without serious effect to the team.  Ability to address root cause with guidance, corrective actions for low complexity field failure or experiment failures.
