We are looking for a Director Sustainable Design and Development to join our Chemtech division in Winterthur.

In this position you would lead and drive the Design and Development of proprietary products and processes for the Sulzer Chemtech business units. This entails managing the R&D teams located in various Innovation and Technology Centers. The role includes developing strategy and road map jointly with various stake holders.

Your main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Accountable for R&D programs, fostering customer mindset of R&D teams

  • Structure content of R&D programs jointly with T&I management, the stakeholders of the business, and own team leaders / R&D program managers

  • Ensure proper planning (scheduling, budgeting) of projects and adherence to internal processes

  • Drive R&D project execution, monitor progress and quality of projects, report progress

  • Accountable for Innovation

  • Promote open innovation and coordinate co-operation with external partners and universities

  • Seek opportunities for co-operations with external and internal partners

  • Ensure swift assessment of internal innovation ideas and decision making

  • Accountable for market and technology intelligence

  • Foster the use of tools providing market and technology intelligence, analyse such intelligence

  • Draw conclusions for own R&D activities and incorporate findings in development road maps

  • Accountable for protection of intellectual property

  • Ensure proper documentation of project findings and uniform data management

  • Watch for opportunities to protect IP, contribute to decisions related to IP protection

  • Support direct reports having the function as IP portfolio managers

  • Budget responsibility

  • Set up annual R&D and investment budget for own organization

  • Ensure proper cost control with support of controller

  • Resource planning and budget related decisions

  • Responsible for R&D road map

  • Contribute to strategy development

  • Develop R&D road map based on identified strategy

  • Implement road map execution

  • Team leadership and development

  • Care for health and safety of own teams, ensure proper risk assessments and management of change

  • Leading and developing a team, including hiring and performance management

  • Manage the relevant budgets associated with the team and the strategic initiatives

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • 15 years of work experience in R&D, having managed research teams or having hold similar functions in a Technology & Innovation or scientific environment

  • Educational Level: Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemistry

  • Languages: English fluent, any other language is beneficial

  • Soft skills:

  • Excellent Team Player with brilliant presentation skills and communication skills.

  • Curiosity-driven, creative

  • Analytical thinking

  • Practical approach to troubleshooting and problem solving

  • Ability to coach direct reports, support teams and to develop a learning culture
