New Hanover County is looking for a Maintenance Assistant to join the new Maintenance Division of the Recycling and Solid Waste Department. New Hanover County is seeking a Maintenance Assistant to perform manual labor tasks at the county landfill with duties to include:

- Conducting routine maintenance and cleaning of heavy equipment including bulldozers, excavators, compactors, and loaders - Organizing maintenance shop and assisting with inventory control - Mowing grass, trimming using a weed eater, and accomplishing other landscaping tasks as needed to assist with site aesthetics - Directing traffic and assisting with Customer Convenience Site operations - Acts as back-up for heavy equipment operators once trained and certified as competent. Located in coastal southeastern North Carolina, the New Hanover County Department of Environmental Management oversees one of the state\'s most advanced integrated solid waste disposal systems. The Department operates a recycling drop-off collection system, a Household Hazardous Waste and electronic waste collection system, a RCRA Subtitle D landfill, Construction and Demolition Debris (CandD) diversion, and yard waste passive composting operations. The resulting system minimizes the use of land resources consumed for burying the waste we generate and minimizes the potential risks for contaminating the area\'s delicate environment. Qualifications

: Required E ucation and Experience:

- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two (2) years of related equipment operation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licenses/Certifications

: - Valid NC Driver license is required - CDL license is a plus - Farming experience a plus
