       JOB DESCRIPTION: Maintenance / HVAC worker to assists in maintaining the efficient, safe, and economical operation of the school buildings, grounds, and equipment.REPORTS TO:The Director of Facilities and/or Supervisor of Custodial and Maintenance Operations RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs troubleshooting and maintenance in HVAC, electrical, electronics, and plumbing; assists in obtaining quotes and arranging for services of outside vendors; obtains estimates for supplies and repair parts; orders parts as needed. Maintains records of scheduled maintenance procedures.

  • Performs a variety of daily and routine maintenance, repair, and construction activities in the Windham Public Schools' building portfolio, including, but not limited to, carpentry, flooring, lock repairs, landscaping and landscaping construction, sheetrock repair, painting, hardware repair/replacement, material handling, and ceiling grid modifications.

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and related job tasks in all district facilities including, but not limited to, HVAC, electrical, electronics, and plumbing equipment so that they are maintained in a safe, clean, and orderly condition in accordance with regulations; maintain hand and power tools in working condition.

  • Works independently on a regular basis with minimal supervision to complete assigned tasks expediently and with a high degree of quality/workmanship.

  • Performs repairs and minor renovations to both the interior and exterior of buildings

  • Aides in the inspection of buildings, grounds, and equipment and reports all observed items in need of repair or replacement.

  • Receives after-hours calls when building issues arise and responds to issues as directed, which may require overtime hours, including weekends: updates supervisor, building occupants, and Director regarding the status of building issues.

  • Operates snowplowing and sanding equipment, as well as other landscape construction equipment, safely and efficiently.

  • Utilizes technology devices and platforms to manage work orders and inspections.

  • Works cooperatively with other employees of the school district and Town of Windham as assigned

  • Aides with general assignments such as preparing areas for graduation ceremonies, etc.

  • Accepts other assignments as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities, Supervisor of Custodial and Maintenance Operations, and as may be determined by the District.

  • Conforms to all Board policies and regulations

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School or vocational school graduate or GED

  • Five years or more experience in general construction in carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical repairs, and general maintenance; Experience in commercial or school facility maintenance preferred

  • Technical post-secondary training: a license in one or more fields is preferred

  • Knowledge of design, operation, repair, and replacement of building subsystems, including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, heating, water, and septic, as well as some knowledge of controls for fire, heating/cooling systems

  • Basic knowledge of state and local building and fire codes and regulation

  • Experience operating equipment and conducting snow removal with heavy-duty (non-CDL) trucks and accessories.

  • The ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics

  • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively with all people, including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities

  • Ability to comply with Maintenance On-Call Policy

  • Ability to work cooperatively with other maintenance and custodial employees, supervisors, teachers, and other personnel

  • Physically and mentally able to lift reasonable loads, climb ladders, use scaffolding, and whatever tools may be required to perform the responsibilities of the position

  • Possess a valid Connecticut State Driver's License and have a clean driving record.

  • Ability to perform all required duties under stressful conditions

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or greater

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Twelve-month position, forty (40) hours a week, Holidays and vacations based on the Maintenance contract, Fringe benefits, and salary as negotiated with the Windham Board of Education EVALUATION:The Director of Facilities and/or Supervisor of Custodial and Maintenance Operations will evaluate the performance of the responsibilities as described and assigned.
