Job Overview:

The Principal Piping Designer utilizes approved design systems in the production of complex piping design deliverables for a given project. Lead Smaller groups in focused areas with guidance from overall Project Piping Leadership team.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Read and understand the Scope of Work and project specifications for design for an assigned project

  • Understand the principles of piping design as it pertains to supporting pipe and thermal growth

  • Understand and adhere to the basic principle of economical piping design

  • Generate conceptual plant layouts utilizing industry, McDermott, and client spacing requirements

  • Prepare FEED documents, planning studies, and design deliverables of high technical quality

  • Develop and maintain plot plans and equipment arrangements provided from an estimate

  • Communicate complex technical solutions and concepts to other engineers and non-engineers

  • Support and develop less experienced designers

  • Routing of piping from P & IDs into the 3D system for assigned areas in accordance with project specifications

  • Generate Piping Bulk Take-Offs for piping materials

  • Perform as Piping Design Area Lead on assigned projects, leading others within given work area

  • Keep Project Area Lead and Piping Design Supervisor informed of any changes and discrepancies occurring during the design process

  • Communicate and interface with all other discipline designers to assure a clash free environment in the 3D Design

  • Adhere to the project adopted standard supports for supporting pipe

  • Ensure compliance with the Project Execution Plan and timely completion of deliverables

  • Assumes responsibility for cost, schedule, quantity and budget control

  • Maintain and promote a focus on McDermott’s end product whether it be engineering, fabrication or construction

  • Assist Piping Design Supervisor in project leadership activities as required

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • High School Diploma with Associates of Applied Science Degree or Technical Certificate from recognized Technical School in Engineering Design and a minimum of 10 years progressive experience in piping Design or 15 years progressive Experience as a Piping Designer

  • Advanced working knowledge of Design Software Systems (E3D, PDMS, S3D)

  • Leadership skills including communication, work ethic, and time management
