Manual Lathe/Engine Lathe Machinist

This position requires judgement to plan & perform normal range of operations requiring tool setting and machining with a manual lathe. This position requires application of established machining procedures that may affect quality of work.

Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:

• Set up and operate manual lathes to perform a series of repetitive machining operations, such as turning, boring, threading, or facing of metal work pieces such as casting, forgings, & bar stock according to specifications, sketches, routing instructions and knowledge of turning procedures.

• Reads blueprints, sketches, job orders for such specifications as dimensions, tolerances, and instructions.

• Positions & secures tools in holders using wrenches.

• Lifts workpiece manually & positions & secures it between lathe centers, in chuck or in holding fixture, using wrenches.

• Moves controls to set specified rotation speeds, feed rates, & depth of cuts.

• Observes machining operation to detect malfunctions or excessive tool wear.

• Verifies conformance of machined work to specifications using gauges, calipers, & micrometers.

• Changes worn tooling.

• May compute such date as dimensions, rotation speeds, feed rates, & machining times using knowledge of shop mathematics & metal properties.

• Perform miscellaneous duties & responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: (Provide bullet points that indicate skills or experience that would be helpful but not required for this position.)

• Must have a minimum of 2+ years of experience in the related field, though prefer candidate who has 5+ years of experience in the related filed.

• Must be able to set up and operate manual equipment efficiently.

• Must have good mechanical skills.

• High school diploma or GED.

• Aerospace experience is preferred.

• Experience with close tolerance and high-quality precision work. The ability to execute complex set-ups requiring unique and non-routine methods.

• Solid understanding of metal properties and use of precision/non-precision instruments.

• Strong basic math skills.

• Ability to read drawings, tool layouts and specifications.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Strong communications and teamwork skills.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

• Work in standing position 8 hours/shift

• Considerable arm movement and walking required, bending and stooping.

• Work requires close attention to lifting and handling of medium weight parts up to 50 lbs.

• Average shop conditions with some temperature variations due to seasons

• Subjected to noisy environment requires wearing of ear plugs.

• Work around and with electrical leads, electric motors & wiring

• Standard PPE required: safety glasses, safety shoes and gloves.
