Annual Salary: $46,138 to $53,414 Based on experience and certification $1,750 w/ Masters Degree

Hours: 7:15 AM - 2:45 PM

    General Responsibilities:

    The School Social Worker serves as a liaison between the home, school and community. The school social worker is responsible for direct casework with parents and children, consulting with school personnel and for being referral source to and liaison with community agencies.

  • Works closely with administrators, teachers, counselors, and other personnel in making provisions for the optimal education for students

  • Collect pertinent and appropriate information on the student and his/her home environment. The social worker will observe the student in the classroom when advisable

  • Interpret the aims, objectives, and procedures of the program and assists in establishing a close cooperative relationship between the home and school

  • Interprets to the parents their responsibilities for the student's proper development and adjustment to school.

  • Assists with family problems which may be interfering with the best development of the student

  • Increases the parents' understanding, their constructive and consistent participation, and recommended their use of appropriate community resources

  • Carries on case conferences with school personnel to interpret home and community conditions in order that they may be more aware of the student's problems outside of the school, and to establish and plan for their respective roles in the modifications of the pupil's behavior

  • Becomes familiar with community agencies and recommends to the appropriate office students who should be referred there; then assists in making referrals and follow-ups where advisable

  • Prepares written and oral presentations as required

  • Carry on counseling with the individual child to assist in the improvement of personal, social, and emotional maladjustment and to develop an attitude of responsible self-direction in school and community life

  • Make a final written summary with recommendations upon the closing of each case

  • Investigate cases of extreme truancy

  • Assist in the reporting of abuse and/or neglect to Child Protective Services

  • Have a good working knowledge of law as it pertains to minors

  • Other related duties as assigned by the Related Service Administrator

Job Qualifications

  • Must hold valid New York State Teacher Certification for School Social Worker

  • Must hold valid NYS license for LCSW or LMSW, LCSW preferred

  • Experience working in Special Education and/or with at risk children providing counseling

  • Must be able to work in a school setting providing social emotional support to students and resources to families as needed.

  • Ability to manage IEP mandated counseling services and participate in Annual Reviews and CSE meetings for students.

  • Must be able to maintain appropriate documentation and work with members of the education team to ensure the students' needs are met.
