Athene API Management Engineer in West Des Moines, Iowa

Purpose:

As an API Management Engineer within our Share Services Team, you will spearhead the management and optimization of Athene's API ecosystem. You will provide technical leadership, best practices, and support in building and managing APIs using an API Management Platform (Kong), while leveraging cloud infrastructure and DevOps principles. Your role will involve collaborating with Application Dev Teams and Share Service / Security Teams to ensure seamless integration and operation of APIs across various applications and services.

Accountabilities:

  • Serve as a key leader and expert in API Management practices, with a focus on platforms like Kong.

  • Design, develop, and manage APIs using API Management platforms, ensuring high availability, scalability, and security.

  • Collaborate with multiple teams to integrate APIs into applications and services, fostering harmonious interactions between systems.

  • Implement and automate API deployment, monitoring, and versioning processes using DevOps practices.

  • Build, automate, and deploy highly available, robust, and resilient API solutions on cloud infrastructure.

  • Voice support for and mentor others in API Management and DevOps practices across the organization.

  • Implement and support Continuous Integration and Deployment pipelines for API development and deployment.

  • Lead API Strategy engagements, API technology and architecture efforts, and API lifecycle management initiatives.

  • Provide expertise in API security, governance, compliance, and risk management requirements.

  • Develop and maintain documentation for APIs, API Management configurations, and related processes.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience required.

  • 6+ years' experience building and leading APIs using API Management platforms.

  • Hands-on experience designing and maintaining APIs with an API Management Platform - Kong.

  • Experience with common application authentication and authorization technologies including OIDC, OAuth2.0, JWT, and SIGv4

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, and proficiency in cloud-native services.

  • Architectural experience with microservices and distributed applications, leveraging containers or serverless technology.

  • Deep understanding of DevOps principles and practices, with experience in CI/CD pipelines, automation tools, and developer enablement/tooling (GitHub, GitHub Actions, SpaceLift, Jenkins, Backstage, Harness)

  • Experience with Configuration Management platforms (Ansible).

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, using tools like CloudFormation and Terraform.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to solve complex issues in API environments.
