Harsco is recognized for technical leadership and worldwide experience in virtually all major aspects of railway track maintenance. We enable railroads to operate at peak efficiency over smooth, precisely aligned track that increases railway safety while reducing fuel consumption and other key operating costs. Our broad array of equipment and services support every type of railway operator, from major national and international railway systems, to short lines and high-speed urban transit networks.

As an Accountant you will play a key role in our accounting department. You will work independently through the monthly general ledger close process, analyze large amounts of data, and research discrepancies. The position offers opportunities to collaborate closely with other departments within the company.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform month-end close activities including but not limited to posting journal entries, preparing account reconciliations, analyzing data reports and researching discrepancies

  • Support Contract Services line of business by tracking contract costs and assisting with preparation of quotes

  • Responsible for Harsco Rail Canada and Harsco Rail Metro general ledgers

  • Suggest process improvement initiatives and provide solutions to enhance current processes.

  • Responsible for Sale Tax Reporting to include reconciliation of accounts and tax filings through Avalara software

  • Maintain month end closing schedules and related task assignments in Smartsheet

  • Division Administrator for Blackline (account reconciliation) software

  • Assist in preparation of schedules as required for quarterly reviews, tax reporting and annual audit

  • Provide ad-hoc analysis and support as needed

  • Perform other reasonably related tasks as assigned by management

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance

  • Knowledge of US GAAP

  • Proficient with Excel

  • Possess the ability to perform accurate account reconciliations while understanding the activity and movements of various accounts and remediate any anomalies in a timely manner

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems involving few concrete variables

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

  • Ability to effectively plan and organize

  • Strong analytical skills
