General Summary Statement

The staff pharmacist is responsible for the total operations of the outpatient pharmacy which includes processing employee prescriptions, dispensing prescriptions to the employee, providing patient education with the aid of patient leaflets, maintains the patient profile, monitors drug therapy for contraindications, incompatibilities, and allergies. The pharmacist also performs bimonthly reconciliation of PBM drug cost statements, performs pharmacy computer updates, and works jointly with the UPHS pharmacy benefit program staff regarding changes to the outpatient drug formulary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates the skills necessary to provide job duties as appropriate for the age of the patients/significant others served. This includes interacting with the patient in a manner that preserves patient dignity and privacy. Integrates principles of growth and development into practice related to safety and communication.

  2. Monitors drug therapy for contraindications, incompatibilities, allergies, and dosing errors. Contacts physician for drug duplication or interactions. Contacts physician for therapeutic interchanges.

  3. Provides patient drug information with the assistance of medication leaflets for verbal counseling.

  4. Follows through on all medications requiring a precertification.

  5. Accurately processes outpatient prescriptions in a timely fashion.

  6. Maintains appropriate inventory and at the same time is aware of hospital contracts and is cognizant of market basket contract issues.

  7. Reconciles PCS bimonthly statements with hospital’s actual ingredient costs.

  8. Processes quarterly computer updates received from McKesson Pharmacy Systems.

  9. Engages the assistance of the staff pharmacists for workflow coverage as needed. Communicates to pharmacists work in progress for continuity of employee satisfaction.

  10. Communicates with allied health professionals promptly and effectively. Identifies self and department courteously when calling or answering the phone.

  11. Participates in the training of new employees. Provide guidance and support to Pharmacy students to ensure a positive learning experience.

  12. Has a working knowledge of the outpatient pharmacy computer system. Contacts software company as needed for support issues.

  13. Adheres to federal and state laws, regulations of governing agencies such as The Joint Commission and DEA and the State Board of Pharmacy and hospital policies regarding the drug use, documentation, and control.

Education Training and Experience

BSc or PharmD. Outpatient pharmacy experience required.
