Job Description

Role:

Working with the RN/Nordics Senior Counsel and Area Counsel, the role will provide strategic legal support for the affiliates in Belgium and the Netherlands.

As a strategic business partner, the individual will focus on continuously building an effective legal support function addressing the most pressing legal challenges in both affiliates and enabling/protecting the business in a proactive and creative way.

The work will include the following elements:

  • Provision of legal advice and support focused on business-oriented solutions on a wide range of matters to colleagues in Belgium and the Netherlands. Such matters include legal market access issues, competition law (e.g., supply/distribution/regulatory related issues), pharmaceutical law/advertising, commercial law and general risk management (e.g. ABAC). The role will require the negotiation and preparation of an extensive range of agreements and, in some cases, negotiations with payors and third parties. The individual will need to resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise.

  • Support to the Area Counsel and US Litigation team with managing litigation.

  • Drive legal strategy and support in cross functional meetings including MLOR meetings (Medical/Legal/OEC/Regulatory) and act as a core member of the Compliance Forum in each applicable affiliate.

  • Monitor changes in laws and the external environment that affect relevant areas of business. Provide training on new developments and key legal topics of importance. Develop practical checklists and working tools for the business to facilitate their work.

  • Represent AbbVie externally to customers, suppliers, competitors, government agencies and industry associations. Take a proactive role in industry association legal committees and on key topics of importance to AbbVie.

  • To the extent that complex problems or specific technical expertise is required, select and direct the work of outside counsel.

  • Continuously develop a solid knowledge of AbbVie´s business and organization and knowledge of the broader business impact of decisions made.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Lawyer qualified in Belgium, Netherlands or another continental jurisdiction.

  • Law school degree.

  • At least 8 years of professional legal expertise, preferably in an international environment, ideally at a law firm and/or multi-national company.

  • Experience in supporting senior business leaders.

Competences and Skills:

  • Highly motivated, flexible, independent with capability to influence people and take initiative. Strong integrity, and strong communication skills.

  • Ability to prioritise and manage workload and with outside counsel where needed.

  • Solution-oriented, with ability to proactively identify solutions to complex legal and business challenges.

  • Executive presence and capability to contribute at management level and beyond legal role only.

  • Cultural sensitivity to working in a multi-national company and the ability to work effectively in cross functional teams.

Location and Languages:

  • Based in either of the markets with ability to travel (see below).

  • Prepared to travel regularly to the other affiliate where not based depending on client needs (around 50% of the time depending on location of candidate).

  • Fluent in English.

  • Dutch and French language skills are a plus.
