Job Title:PRESCHOOL SPED ASSOCIATE

Reports to:Building Principal

Frequentlymust accept direction from the Lead teacher.

BASIC FUNCTION: May assist students by helping individuals or small groups of students with academic support implementing instruction, reinforcing learning skills, reinforcing school-wide discipline procedures, movement to & from classes, bus, etc., and personal health & hygiene. May assist instructors with preparation of classroom materials, monitoring students, and evaluating and recording student achievement. May supervise students in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, study hall, recess, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Presents educational lessons, materials or programs to students in a one-to-one and group setting.

  • Supervise students in the lunchroom, restrooms, halls, and in those areas as requested.

  • Assists classroom teacher in monitoring pupils in the classroom and supervising students on field trips, recess and other activities; may monitor the class when teacher is otherwise occupied.

  • Assists the teacher in preparing materials for instruction by setting up and using computers, and audiovisual equipment and materials.

  • Makes quick, responsible decisions regarding student welfare and safety, including counseling students regarding conduct and self-discipline.

  • Assists classroom teacher in organizing and utilizing reference and source materials; assist teacher in developing individual instructional materials.

  • Administers tests, records results and charts remedial measures as required by the teacher.

  • Performs clerical work required for filing and maintaining student records and operates machines, such as photocopier machines.

  • Knows emergency procedures for the buildings and classrooms assigned.

  • Completes Medicaid documentation as required.

  • Reports incidents of unusual nature to teachers and principal.

  • Assists the classroom teacher in assessing student work.

  • Maintains confidentiality of student information

  • Assists student with toileting or other like needs.

  • Fills in for other aide absences as required by administration.

  • Manages one’s own time efficiently.

  • Attends in-service training and school meetings as appropriate.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Experience working with preschool age children preferred.

  • Experience in education, psychology, or related fields is preferred.

  • Knowledge or the ability to be trained to meet the responsibilities of the job.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Para-educator certification through the BOEE or willing to obtain required

  • Completion of required training upon hire.

SKILLS:

  • Patiences, empathy and excellent communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a team

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to work with interruptions during a work shift.

  • Must be capable of standing/walking throughout the workday.

  • Must be capable of lifting up to 25 pounds to chest level.

  • Must be capable of carrying 25 pounds at waist level up 54 steps.

  • Must be capable of carrying 25 pounds at waist level for a distance of 150 feet.

  • Must be capable of climbing 4 steps of a ladder.

  • Must be capable of squatting up to 2 minutes at a time.

  • Must be capable of bending over up to 3 minutes at a time.

  • Must possess vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Must be capable of lifting or moving up to 25 pounds.

  • Being able to kneel or sit on the floor to interact with students at their level is often required.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • Daily works in outside weather conditions.
