Job Description

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced tire engineer to develop the best road, city, and mountain bike tires in the world. Use your technical expertise to design, prototype, and develop new products in both R&D and production projects. Work as a team to create the next generation of tires that will have a big impact on the cycling industry.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform engineering research, design, testing, and development tasks for Bontrager tire products of varying complexity in a team environment

  • Learn, create, and implement engineering tools that will enable you and your teammates to be successful in creating best-in-class tires

  • Create and develop engineering specification packages that effectively communicate to internal and external partners to ensure products meet given project parameters

  • Effectively balance multiple projects, responsibilities, and tasks simultaneously

  • Translate customer/rider feedback into specifications for tire tread design, compounds, and constructions

  • Coordinate engineering activities with domestic / foreign design teammates

  • Travel as necessary both domestically and internationally (typically Taiwan and Europe)

  • Develop collaborative relationships with vendors and work with them to develop new bicycle tire technologies

  • Stay informed of new technology through technical publications and seminars

  • Work in conjunction with Trek racing teams to develop appropriate Bontrager and Trek products that perform at the highest level

  • Conducting patent searches and perform idea generation

  • Provide expertise to bike groups, athletes, marketing, and other internal customers

    Required Skills

  • Experience in tire development including tire compounds, tread design, and constructions

  • Proficient mechanical aptitude and product design experience

  • Candidates should be self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced team environment

  • Detail oriented with proficient planning skills, initiative, and accountability

  • Excellent communication skills, able to interact effectively with domestic and international teammates

  • Ability to interpret data and solve complex problems

  • Positive attitude that fosters continuous improvement and flexibility

  • Computer aided engineering skills including solid modeling, simulation programs and advanced mathematical modeling and analysis programs

  • Competent computer database, spreadsheet, presentation, and word processing abilities

    Additional Skills And Knowledge

  • Passion for and knowledge of high-performance bicycle tires

  • In depth knowledge and experience developing rubber compounds for high end tires

  • In depth knowledge of tread design for off-road tires

  • Knowledge of high-end tire materials and constructions, and how these influence performance

  • Passion for sustainability and interest in working with vendors to make our products eco friendly

  • Experience owning a tire product design from initial concept through production implementation

  • Experience with statistics, advanced mathematical modeling, and analysis programs such as FEA and CFD

  • Understanding of tire testing and analysis of testing results to further develop products

    Education And Training

  • 5-10 years' experience in an engineering related field focused on R&D and product development

  • Bachelor’s degree, tire engineering, materials science, or equivalent

  • Post graduate studies in an engineering related field is a plus
