Lutheran Services in Iowa Interpreter in Waterloo, Iowa

LSI is seeking an occasional Interpreter for our Refugee & Immigrant Community Services serving clients in the Waterloo area. Interpreters are needed for the following languages: French, Swahili, Arabic, Karenni, Karen, Haitian Creole, Burmese, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

DUTIESProvide direct interpretation and translation services between users of different languages. Interpret conversations in-person and translate documents and forms. Communicate effectively with clients, community partners, volunteers, and staff to ensure efficient, high quality service to clients. Uphold interpretation ethics and guidelines. Length of position assignment may depend on the changing language needs of the program.

Hours will be scheduled as needed and may vary during the weekdays and Saturdays. Hours will vary by week with no guaranteed amount of hours. QUALIFICATIONSQualified applicants will have a high school diploma/equivalent and 1 year of experience interpreting in the refugee community. Must have linguistic skills to meet the needs of populations served. Qualified applicants will be fluent in English and one or more languages (with desired languages listed above).This position requires a valid driver's license, auto insurance, a good driving record and the ability to pass an extensive background check including checks of the Dependent Adult and Child Abuse registries, Sex Offender registry and a criminal history check.
