Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Political Law Paralegal to support our Public Law & Policy practice, reporting to the Public Law & Policy Practice Coordinator.

This role will reside in the Washington, DC office with hybrid work capabilities and will be responsible for working on a wide range of political law issues including compliance with federal, state and local lobbying regulations, campaign finance and pay to play laws, and laws governing gifts and entertainment provided to public officials. All team members are given substantive, meaningful and challenging work. The practice is nonpartisan and focuses exclusively on assisting private-sector clients navigate the rules regarding interactions with government officials.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Frequent communication with government agencies on behalf of clients

  • Monitoring legislative and regulatory developments as they pertain to client interests

  • Conducting legislative and regulatory research in response to client requests

  • Preparation and filing of lobbying registration and disclosure reports at the federal, state, and local levels

  • Maintain familiarity with changes to lobbying registration and reporting requirements across all jurisdictions in which clients are registered

  • Manage multiple PACs on a day to day basis:

  • Maintain PAC balances;

  • Maintain compliance records;

  • Prepare and submit any state required PAC filings in a timely manner;

  • Prepare and submit federal PAC filings in a timely manner;

  • Resolve any inconsistencies of PAC balances or filings; and

  • Assist clients as needed with solicitations and PAC data reports

  • Draft memorandum, papers, and letters for clients

  • Draft Alerts and other information updates to be published online

  • Research various topics of importance to clients on campaign finance and lobbying matters

  • Monitor and review political contributions for clients to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local limitations

  • Assume other responsibilities as requested in support of the practice group’s goals and objectives

    Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Ability to take direction and learn new tasks quickly

  • Excellent project management and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines

  • Inquisitiveness, along with the ability to spot issues

  • Collaborative approach with the team and clients with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility and work with others

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong knowledge of the political and legislative processes

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Must be a self-starter able to operate independently

  • Must be able to demonstrate strong customer service skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, in particular Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

  • Must possess good judgment and a strong sense of professionalism, responsibility, and integrity
