Serco Mid-Level SSC/LCAC HM&E Engineer in Washington, District Of Columbia

Position Description

Join Serco as a Ship-to-Shore Connector (SSC) / Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) Mid-Level Hull, Mechanical and Electrical (HM&E) General Engineer. You will be part of a team evaluating and managing the design, construction, testing, and delivery of HM&E equipment, components, or systems onto new amphibious landing craft and sustaining existing fleet assets. Serco supports the U.S. Navy as a prime contractor providing professional support services. This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret level clearance post-employment.

Our team is led by a Program Manager and Deputy Program Manager, each having decades of experience working in the DoD and Shipbuilding Industry. Our Naval Acquisition and Sustainment Operation, which is part of Serco's Maritime Engineering, Technology and Sustainment (METS) business, provides critical services to nearly all U.S. Navy surface ships and craft, supporting new construction, repair, maintenance, modernization, and sustainment.

You will work closely with Government, maritime industry professionals, and other support personnel. Our objective: to ensure our clients’ mission objectives are achieved with the highest level of capability and assurance, and at the lowest possible cost.

In this role:

  • You will assist the Government Technical Principal Assistant Program Manager (PAPM) deliver new landing craft to the fleet, providing engineering support integral to acquisition programs in the fields of preliminary and contract design support, detail design and contract support, pre-delivery availability and post-delivery support, operations and sustainment support, or fleet modernization program life cycle support. This may include:

  • Resolve technical issues and support on-site meetings.

  • Research, design, develop, test, or supervise the manufacturing and installation of HM&E equipment, components, or systems.

  • Study drawings and specifications and perform complex calculations to conceive equipment and systems designed to meet requirements.

  • Oversee and evaluate operation of equipment during acceptance testing, ship trials, and shakedown cruises.

  • Conduct Configuration Management (CM) by maintaining the integrity of work products using configuration identification, configuration control, configuration status accounting, and configuration audits.

  • Assist in maintaining or developing ship specifications and ship drawings, engineering change proposals, and potential work items.

  • Collaborate with government and contractor personnel to develop technical documentation per contract requirements.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering plus 2+ years of experience or successfully completed a professional engineering degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited college or university. Military or DoD experience can be substituted for a degree if 5 or more years of specific work experience can be demonstrated in an analogous or higher-level position.

  • A technical understanding of Hull, Mechanical and Electrical (HM&E) systems is required.

  • A current DoD security clearance or be able to obtain an interim clearance post-employment.

  • Ability to operate personal computers and have good knowledge and operational abilities with Microsoft Office tools.

  • Ability to support activities in a shipyard or naval facility. Some work may occur within an industrial field office, outdoors and/or aboard ship while the ship is undergoing construction, alteration, activation, overhaul, repair, and/or underway trials. Walking and climbing throughout the ship, may be required. Exposure to high noise levels, uncomfortable temperatures, heights, or other industrial safety conditions will require use of personal protective clothing and equipment.

  • Ability to travel 10% to support activities in a shipyard or naval facility or onboard ship while underway.

  • United States (U.S.) citizenship.

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Two or more years of relevant experience with U.S. Navy or U.S. Coast Guard ship construction, ship repair, or ship maintenance is desired. Relevant experience is professional experience of essentially the same scope and complexity as that described in the “Position Description”, above, to include research, design, develop, test, or supervise the manufacturing and installation of HM&E equipment, components, or systems.

  • Configuration control experience is desired.

  • Familiarity with Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion, and Repair, USN, Gulf Coast (SSGC) operations and staff is highly desirable.

  • Previous HM&E, Merchant Marine, or Navy experience is highly desirable.

  • Relevant amphibious landing craft air cushion (LCAC) experience is ideal.

  • Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act of 1990 (DAWIA) certification is desired.

  • Experience working within DoD/Navy ACAT I Programs is desired.
