LINUX Systems Administrator - Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging - Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown’s research-dedicated Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging (CFMI) (https://cfmi.georgetown.edu/) , primarily focused on a variety of neurologic and psychiatric disorders, is actively developing a program utilizing a number of imaging techniques. The environment utilizes a core Linux cluster accessed by a mix of Mac and Windows-based workstations. Most of the processes related to administration of center activities are handled by internally developed web applications (PHP and MySQL), with reliance on these systems to administer activities such as scheduling scan slots, setting up and maintaining user accounts, retrieving data, and distribute billing invoices. CFMI intends to move from an on-premises environment to the cloud in the next year.

Job Overview

The Linux System Administrator serves as CFMI’s technology expert, with responsibilities for maintaining and upgrading the computing infrastructure for not only CFMI, but also three other associated neuroscience labs at Georgetown University.

As well, they maintain and update the systems, and document and communicate changes with the Director of CFMI.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of CFMI, the LINUX Systems Administer interacts with other labs’ Principal Investigators (PIs) to meet their labs’ server and security needs that are related to imaging data storage.

As well, they serve as the primary liaison with University Information Services (UIS) to ensure that all GU policies and procedures are observed regarding hardware, software, and security; and work with the MRI scan tech team at CFMI, various Lab Managers, and with a variety of users, including faculty, students and staff.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, System Administration or a closely related field, or equivalent experience

  • At least 4 years computer experience in a Linux/UNIX environment

  • Strong ability to work in a team with excellent customer service attitude and good verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent demonstrable and written communication skills via the ability to translate complex and technical concepts into readily-understood language for faculty, administrators, students, alumni and external constituents

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Strong planning and organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities with finite resources

  • Initiative and ability to explore new ideas and to develop innovative direction and solutions, particularly in ambiguous environments/ situations

  • Strong skills in communication, problem-solving, and needs analysis

  • Openness to learning basic neuroimaging concepts and DICOM data storage strategies - e.g., PACS

  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed

  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population

  • Solid background in the hardware and software configuration for development and maintenance of all center administration services (user accounts, backups, website maintenance, etc.), writing shell scripts, performing hardware and software installations and upgrades, creating backups, installing patches, analyzing server performance, etc.

  • Sufficient familiarity with electronic components and basic computer hardware maintenance

  • Experienced with Sbash programming and Linux administration; backend development, especially databases (MySQL/PHP); Git/GitHub version control; cloud computing and networking; Web Service APIs; programming in HTML, CSS; containers (e.g., Docker) and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), and high computing performance clusters (HPC)

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to instruct and train users

  • Proven ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and to solve problems quickly

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications

  • System administration and IT certifications in Linux, Microsoft, or other network related fields

  • Experience working in a higher education environment and understanding of its structure and dynamics

  • Experience with public cloud storage solutions - for example, Amazon Web Service (AWS) or Google Cloud

  • Strong background in the administration of Linux workstations and servers in standalone and cluster configurations

  • Experienced programming in Python, MATLAB, and Javascript
