Library Systems & Services Federal Library Technician in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary:

The position serves as a Federal Library Technician for the Collections Holding and Inventory Improvement Project (CHIIP), located at the Library of Congress. The position reports to the respective Assistant Project Manager(s) and performs duties for inventorying and distribution of the collections, including serials, monographs, and other various collections.

Work is primarily done in collections storage areas which are often at a lower temperature than a standard office environment. Work is physical in nature requiring frequent standing, walking, pushing, stooping, and stretching. Work requires ability to perform moderate lifting - up to 44 lbs.

This position will work a fixed work schedule (40 hours/week).

Duties:

You will review, verify, create update and process collections’ bibliographic (BREC), holdings (HREC) and item (IREC) records in the LC ILS or other designated databases. This includes assigning collection storage locations, ensuring basic data control, preserving, rehousing, and applying labels/stickers. You will need review, verify, update, and process fields such as but not limited to the fields listed below, to ensure that the IREC matches item in hand:

  • In the BREC

  • In the HREC/IREC

  • LCCN – Library if Congress Control Number

  • Call Number

  • Author

  • Title

  • Public Information

  • Physical Description

  • Location

  • Call Number

  • Copy Number

Requirements

Qualifications

You must have progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

  • High School Diploma/GED required.

  • Knowledge of library collections maintenance practices and procedures.

  • Knowledge of proper library collection retrieval processes and procedures.

  • Knowledge of best practices for the preservation of collection materials.

  • Ability to interact collaboratively with others.

  • Ability to use computerized search tools, web-based tools and online databases.

  • Ability to meet or exceed daily goals.

  • Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
