Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our cultural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

National Capital Parks-East (NACE) is a large complex portfolio of parkland and historic sites in the District of Columbia and Maryland. NACE consists of over 8000 acres distributed among 98 locations. Park resources consist of natural areas, recreation areas, cultural landscapes, historic homes, parkways, farms, archeological sites, historic forts, environmental clean-up sites, and private properties under scenic easement.

SIP in partnership with the National Park Service and National Capital Parks-East (NACE) are seeking 1 individual for an exciting new opportunity within the Professional Services Division. In this role the individual selected will assist staff in the planning, execution, and monitoring of complex multi-disciplinary projects within the NACE portfolio for the management, maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities, including buildings, utilities, trails, roads and other physical assets. Specific projects include but are not limited to improving recreational facilities within the NACE portfolio, rehabilitating hiking trails within the Fort Circle Parks, rehabilitating the Folger Park walkways and sidewalks, and improving the trail system at Oxon Cove Park.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with a multidisciplinary team

  • The refinement and review of project scopes

  • Participation in the development of design scopes work and/or prepare or review independent government estimates.

  • Takin part in design/review conferences, charrettes, and studies with NPS historical architects, conservators, archeologists, outside firms and stakeholders to review aspects of project design relating to project construction work.

  • Assist in conducting on-site inspections of construction projects to ensure project goals are met and tasks are performed in accordance with project plans.

  • Tracking projects progression to ensure projects are meeting target dates and are within cost projections.

The Project Management Assistant will assist federal employees and contractors that specialize in architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, and contract management throughout their service term. This opportunity is designed to develop technical and organizational leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ages 18-30 (Up to 35 with veteran status documentation?)

  • Very strong communication skills (writing/editing)

  • Very strong organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to pass a federal background check

  • Possess a valid driver's license

  • Culturally competent

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated leadership and experience

  • Strategic thinking ability

  • Flexibility and resourcefulness

  • The ability to adapt new skills and ideas to the public sector

    Benefits:

  • Living allowance $600/per week + $240 housing allowance (equivalent to $21/hour)

  • Segal Education Award upon completion of required hours: $1,956.35

  • Upon graduation, planning fellows who successfully complete their internship are eligible for non-competitive hiring into the NPS
