What we want

The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Assistant to serve as a member of the Center for Translational Cancer Research team. We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment to our core values. This person must be professional, enjoy working in a high-volume environment and be able to apply strong organizational skills while being flexible in their daily routine. The Research Assistant will perform experiments to maintain progress of research projects, maintain data, compile information, write and edit publications. Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate Bachelor’s or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment.

  • Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Responsibility and organization a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research laboratory experience, i.e. not classroom labs.

  • Bachelor’s degree in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology or related fields.

  • Experience in plasmid sub-cloning, bacterial culture/antibiotic selection, plasmid DNA isolation, DNA sequencing, bacterial transformation, restriction digestion, agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR, primer design, making solutions and media preparation.

  • Experienced in successful plasmid construction and plasmid design.

  • Experience with second generation cloning techniques (e.g. Gibson Assembly, Gateway, SapTrap, Golden Gate, etc.).

  • Bioinformatics or computational experience.

  • Prior work – even non-scientific - that requires meticulous attention to detail.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Experiments - Conducts experiments and technical procedures; carries out research problems; research literature relation to possible procedures and experiments; modifies procedures to suit the particular research needs.

  • Experimental Procedures - Handling C. elegans, genotyping and generating transgenics, performing experiments to quantify changes in live animals due to genetic and transgenic manipulations.

  • General Laboratory Support Duties - Organize and maintain inventory and equipment used in the lab, manage lab functions for smooth operation. Solutions and media preparation in collaboration with other lab members. Uses computer for controlling equipment and compiling data; makes and records observations and measurements.

  • Data Analysis - Prepares data for analysis and prepares samples. Obtain original research results.

  • Documentation - Assists in writing and/or edits for publication scientific material requiring academic knowledge; researches and catalogs reference materials requiring understanding of subject matter theory.

  • Meetings - Participate in lab meetings within the center and other departments. Participate in joint projects involving the laboratory team.
