POSITION SUMMARY: This Specialty Estimator position will oversee all estimating components related to Commercial Wall and ceiling assemblies, siding systems, and interior/exterior specialties for Hoffman Construction and Hoffman Specialty Contracting.


  • Self-perform all estimating (walls / ceilings, siding systems, interior/exterior specialties) for Hoffman Construction and Hoffman Specialty Contracting projects and ensure compliance with the requirements of the overall construction contract with the Owner.

  • Execute all quantitative takeoffs on construction projects.

  • Performs Contract administration for secured projects, administration of the buy-out and hand-off of projects to the Operations Team.

  • Collaborates with the Preconstruction Manager in the creation of all final estimates to be given to the operations team for project budgets.

  • Work with the Operations Team throughout preconstruction process: review plans, specifications, procedures, timelines, requirements for construction and identify any constructability issues.

  • Establish labor productivities for estimates and staffing requirements for each phase of construction.

  • Prepare wage and benefit schedules, production rates, and assist supervisors with bid reviews.

  • Assists with maintaining the estimating cost data base to ensure costs are up to date.

  • Consults with clients, architects, subcontractors, and material suppliers to discuss and formulate estimates, effect cost reductions, and resolve issues.

  • Assist during Conceptual, Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents phases of project.

  • Reviews design documents for proper information to receive accurate pricing from subcontractors and suppliers, generates acceptable value engineering ideas, and prepares life-cycle costing.

  • Solicit subcontractor pricing for work done outside of our self-perform group.

  • Works with the Virtual Design (BIM) Department to generate quantities from design models and create bid packages.

  • Additional duties as assigned, such as change order management or billings depending on the project(s).


  • Standing/Walking/Sitting: Workday is combination of standing, walking and sitting.

  • Must be able to climb ladders/stairs - 5% of day.

  • Hands/Arms - Constant use of hands/fingers for mouse/keyboard/computer use.

  • Sight - Visual acuity in near, mid and far range vision. Color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, hand/eye coordination.

  • Hearing: sufficient to hear conversational levels in person and over the telephone and radio; sufficient to hear alarms on equipment.

  • Speech sufficient to make oneself heard in person, speak in front of groups, and be understood over the telephone and radio.

  • Lift/Carry - up to 50-pound computer/drawings rarely.

  • Bending/Twisting - minimal

  • Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling - rarely


  • 5 years of project estimating experience in the field

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent degree and/or equivalent work experience

  • Education background in materials and methods of construction

  • Experience specifically on commercial, industrial, healthcare, water treatment and high-tech type of projects

  • Experience in organizing technical data in a neat and accurate method; familiar with CSI specification system for mechanical scopes of work

  • Training in design document reading, design specifications, survey theory and techniques

  • Understanding of the market conditions including competitive approach, backlog, level or risk for work and other factors for establishing margin percentages

  • Maintain positive relationships with area vendors for competitive material and equipment pricing

  • Proficient in the following programs: Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), On Screen Takeoff, Quick Bid, Smart Bid, Revit, and have a general understanding of working within a computer network

  • Has the ability to manage and track multiple preconstruction projects at once

  • Proficient in the following programs: Prolog, Procore, E-Builder laser digital Scanning, Building Information Model (BIM), AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Primavera Project Planner (P6)

  • Ability to multitask activities while simultaneously taking calls and providing responses to urgent questions

  • Must be able to work closely with owners, architects, engineers, equipment manufacturers, vendors and subcontractors

  • Ability to work closely with trade and craft people in a field work situation

  • Highly developed visual observation and interpretation skills

  • Self-starter, quick learner, team leader, problem solver and ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations

  • Flexible work schedule to allow extended periods of overtime or off-shift work to accommodate changing workloads and bid schedule

  • Constant mental alertness, accuracy, and attention to detail required.

  • Must be able to work independently, make decisions, and follow through on all assignments.

  • Must use creativity, independent judgment, and organizational and problem-solving skills to determine best method to accomplish desired results.

  • Must be able to plan and organize work

  • Must possess strong mathematical skills, calculate proper dimensions of components, read/write/speak English, read blueprints, manuals, and communicate with coworkers.
