Summit Design and Engineering Services (office in South Boston, VA) is looking for Construction Inspectors (all levels) to inspect all phases of construction on highway construction, bridge and maintenance projects located in the Lynchburg, VA area.
Responsibilities:
Act and make decisions independently for routine project issues
Foster a partnering relationship with contractors, the general public, and other project stakeholders
Train and supervise trainee inspectors
Monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contractor compliance of moderate complexity under the supervision of senior inspectors
Perform daily record keeping of project activities
Prepare monthly project estimates
Skills and Qualifications:
CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR LEVEL: High School diploma with a minimum of three years of relevant experience and/or an Associate's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
SENIOR CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR LEVEL: High School diploma with a minimum of six years of relevant experience and/or an Associate's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
Working knowledge of mathematics in both algebra and geometry.
Proficient in the use of iPad, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Dropbox and/or OneDrive.
Ability to work independently, use own judgment and make decisions.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Working knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards, construction symbols and terminology.
Working knowledge of state and federal environmental, safety, EEO guidelines and regulations.
Ability to read and interpret roadway, bridge and structure plans and contract specifications.
Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion.
Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights with adequate vision to perform tasks.
Must be able to lift and carry up-to 50 pounds, on occasion.
Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
Must be willing to work nights and weekends as needed.

VDOT Asphalt Field Level I & II
VDOT or NICET Level II Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field
VDOT Pavement Marking
VDOT Slurry Surfacing
VDOT Surface Treatment
VDOT Flagger Certification
Virginia DEQ Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection
Virginia DEQ Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification
Nuclear Gauge Safety and Hazmat Training
Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control
OSHA 10-Hours OSHA Safety Training
VDOT Guardrail Certification
