Amentum Water Plant Mechanic in Antarctica

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures.  Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Responsible for operation, preventative maintenance and repair of the sea water desalinization and treatment system.

  • Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on reverse osmosis units, pumps, valves, piping systems, water monitoring equipment and all auxiliary equipment as required.

  • Maintains cleanliness of water plant.

  • Responds to unscheduled equipment or process failures.

  • Ensures efficient and economical operation of station water production equipment.

  • Willingness to carry a radio or pager for after hour’s call out’s

  • Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed and maintains operating logbooks and databases as required.

  • Maintains control of plant tools, manuals, repair parts, assemblies and consumables. 

  • Maintains inventory accuracy at 98% or better.

  • Works closely with and takes direction from the Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) and coordinates in ordering repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies and consumables.

  • Trains Water Plant Operator’s on mechanical equipment as directed.

  • Complies with applicable Safety, Environment, Health, and Waste Management policies and procedures.

  • Advises the Power & Water Supervisor of the status of water production equipment and systems.

  • Monitors liquid nitrogen production equipment.

  • Monitors and performs preventive maintenance on waste heat recovery system and components.

  • Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of all auxiliary systems including but not limited to glycol pumps & motors, ventilation fans and air compressors.

  • Assists the Waste Water Treatment Plant operator in performing troubleshooting, maintenance, or overhauls of plant equipment.

  • Works a rotating shift; day, swing or night shift

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Performs duties in support of division metrics (as provided by supervisor).

  • Supports the achievement of Amentum and ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, effected by this position's work activities.

  • Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Two years’ experience in maintenance and repair of water treatment equipment.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once is required.  

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of reverse osmosis units, pumps, valves, piping systems, water monitoring equipment and related equipment.

  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment is required.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office

Preferred:

  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40 Hour Certification

  • Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations.

  • High school graduate or GED.

  • Reverse Osmosis experience

Physical and/or Other Requirements :

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
