Job Description: Elementary Special Education Teacher

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

STATUS: Full-Time, Salary

DATE REVISED: April 8, 2016

BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide each student receiving special education services with the individually tailored assistance, counsel, and learning experience he or she needs to make progress toward educational goals in the least restrictive environment possible.

SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Education from an accredited college or university.

  • Valid Iowa teaching license with appropriate endorsements.

  • Successful student teaching and/or prior teaching experience.

  • Completion of Child Abuse Reporting Training.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 188-Day Contract.

  • The VSCSD Board of Directors in negotiation with the VSEA establishes salary & work year.

EVALUATION: The Building Principal evaluates the performance of this job.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.

  • Maintain a “service orientation” and treat all students, parents, staff, and visitors with professional courtesy.

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students and job while communicating the same to the community.

  • Attend seminars, trainings, classes, and professional development as needed to stay current with state and federal regulations and requirements and maintain licensure.

  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions while seeking to improve each performance responsibility.

  • Maintain professionalism related to confidentiality of student records and the school operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide individual and group instruction for students receiving special education services consistent with state education code requirements.

  • Adapts and develops curriculum to meet each student’s needs.

  • Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.

  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records.

  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.

  • Provides behavior management and crisis intervention when needed.

  • Develops and monitors IEPs in compliance with federal and state mandates.

  • Evaluate and document student performance, completing all necessary data collection and reporting.

  • Administer group-standardized tests and alternate assessments in accordance with district testing program.

  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have students with IEPs in regular classes, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff and assisting the student with regular class assignments.

  • Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social, and personal needs of students.

  • Assist other professional staff members in resolving the unique psychological or disciplinary needs of each student.

  • Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements of applicants in the school’s special education program.

  • Counsel individuals and groups of students in special education with educational, social, and personal issues.

  • Assist students in understanding their abilities and in establishing educational goals in keeping with these abilities.

  • Provide redirection and motivation to students as needed.

  • Keep attendance records and all other records pertinent to the special education program for state reports.

  • Plans and coordinate the work of associates and others in the classroom.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to dial, answer and communicate via a telephone in a clear, precise voice.

  • Able to write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions.

  • Able to climb stairs or stand and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while handling items.

  • Able to read and interpret policies, procedures and employee handbook.

  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds using proper lifting techniques.

  • Ability to utilize specialized equipment for lifting, standing or transporting students with special needs.

  • Able to work outdoors for periods of time to perform functions such as Bus Duty and Recess Supervision.

  • Able to hear and speak in order to communicate with students, parents, co-workers, and supervisors.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Primary work setting is the Assigned Attendance Center but duties at times may require working within various attendance centers in the district or accompanying students to special events such as work experience or field trips.

  • May be required to ride a school bus or drive school vehicles to carry out responsibilities of the position.

  • Able to work outdoors for periods of time to perform functions such as Bus Duty and Recess Supervision.

  • May be required to work additional hours as required for special events or during certain times of the year.
