Description

This position involves providing professional nursing care in a nursing home, requiring coordination of individual resident care and executing nursing services that demand substantial specialized judgment and skills. The work is carried out under general supervision from a nursing supervisor and in alignment with prescribed interdisciplinary care plans. Supervision may extend to Nursing Assistants and unit helpers. The role includes related tasks as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Assessing and addressing resident care needs.

  • Supervising Nursing Assistants and unit helpers in resident care and treatment.

  • Directing personal care of residents within the facility.

  • Observing symptoms, reporting, and conducting diagnostic procedures as directed by a physician.

  • Administering medication, applying dressings, and providing nursing and therapeutic treatments as prescribed.

  • Instructing patients and/or family members regarding residents' diet, healthcare, and prescribed rehabilitative measures.

  • Performing other services for residents to prevent illness and improve health.

  • Observing resident activity during meal periods and remaining alert to emergencies.

  • Assisting physicians with resident rounds when necessary.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Working knowledge of current nursing practice.

  • Skill in applying current practical nursing procedures and techniques of resident care.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

  • Dependability, resourcefulness, keen observation skills, and professionalism.

  • Ability to operate medical equipment (e.g., suction machine, oxygen units, vaporizers).

  • Ability to maintain detailed records and prepare reports.

  • Physical condition suitable for the demands of the position.

A) Completion of a course of study approved by the New York State Education Department qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse licensure in New York State; or

B) Completion of a course of study approved by the New York State Education Department qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse licensure and holding a limited permit* to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
