Empire State University seeks a full-time Director of Health and Wellness Programs (State Title: Staff Associate) with experience in providing leadership in preventative health education, addressing mental health concerns, and supporting students' basic needs. The Director leads and facilitates preventative education for the University, manages the nonclinical student mental health response system and related resources for students in crisis, works with internal and external stakeholders, tracks assessment data, reports on student health trends, and manages a budget for health and wellness.

The successful candidate will be committed to student success by supporting SUNY Empire students and ensuring they have information and access to local resources across the state. This person must be collaborative, independent, a self-starter, and able to work with diverse faculty, staff, and students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to SUNY Empire on preventative health and wellness.

  • Advocate for student mental health and basic needs support across the university.

  • Direct response and nonclinical support for students experiencing mental health crises and/or substance use crises.

  • Establish and maintain a health and wellness advisory committee of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Serve as liaison for the Student Behavioral Consultation Team.

  • Collaborate on providing trauma-informed support strategies for student-facing staff and faculty.

  • Research, strategize, and implement potential new programming, training, resources, services, and support for student mental health.

  • Track demographic and trend data related to health and wellness and communicate assessment data with internal stakeholders.

  • Maintain accurate records related to individual student support, compliant with FERPA.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with external vendors. This would include reviewing contracts and executing proposals for services provided by external vendors, including TELUS Health, Mental Health First Aid, and Single Stop Benefits Screener.

  • Manage department budget.

  • Supervise the Basic Needs Coordinator and an administrative assistant.

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Human Services, or a relevant field related to key responsibilities.

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in higher education or human services.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff.

  • Experience with assessment and reporting performance indicators.

  • Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others verbally and in writing.

  • Evidence of ability to communicate, engage, and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, linguistic, and religious backgrounds and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an online/virtual environment.

  • Certified as a trainer in Mental Health First Aid, QPR, or other relevant certifications.

  • Experience researching, securing, and managing grant funding.

  • Experience managing budget and/or procurement of goods and services.

  • Experience working with behavioral intervention teams.

  • Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Prior knowledge of and experience in working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.

  • May involve occasional travel.

  • SUNY Empire provides employees with robust remote and flexible work options to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff in a dispersed work environment. University locations that may be considered include Saratoga Springs, Rochester and Selden, NY.

    Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: SL4 / $75,000-$80,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
