The energy industry, particularly transmission grids, is undergoing major changes to accommodate for regional and global decarbonization and energy transition targets. Underground and subsea cable technology are, in particular, increasingly becoming a major player in this energy paradigm shift to enable large-scale renewable energy generation, such as offshore wind, green hydrogen or large interconnectors.

As an HV Transmission Cable Engineer, you will closely work with regional and global transmission and cable experts within Jacobs to support and/or lead ongoing projects as well as business development and proposal support with a variety of clients including renewable developers, transmission owner/developers as well as utilities.

The successful candidate shall demonstrate related experience and technical knowledge in the field of cable engineering design and installation, with emphasis on high voltage applications (69kV and above), through past experience with consulting engineering firms, developers and/or direct exposure to OEMs. Prior knowledge of electrical design/studies, functional/technical specifications, and/or FAT/SAT commissioning related to cable systems is preferred. Knowledge of the offshore wind market will also be seen favorably.

• Develop HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.

• Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.

• Prepare plant and equipment technical specification, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical and progress reports.

• Ensure correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects, attend, and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.

• Support factory inspections Test (FAT).

• Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, Sheath induced voltage calculations and other.

• Perform design reviews, verification of design.

• Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHQE department.

• Assist with temporary works design schemes.

• Maintain good working relations with client / designer / Team, together with our supply chain.

• Advise engineers on setting out methods and techniques.

• Ensure that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works. Formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the program to proceed without delay.

• Prepare written risk assessments and method statements for the control of the works.

• Ensure that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the specifications, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality.

Here's What You'll Need:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, from a recognized institution. Master’s degree is preferred.

• Minimum 8 years of direct experience with underground and/or subsea cable design and installation.

• Ability to work with cable design software such as CYMCAP.

• Knowledge of applicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE.

• Exceptional problem-solving and analytical capabilities with a focus achieving results.

• Team player with great interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

• Experience with major global cable OEMs.

• Ability and willingness to travel within North America.

Ideally, You’ll Also Have:

• Experience with HVDC and/or subsea cable technologies

• Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) License

• Active/ongoing involvement in power cable related working groups and standards committees such as ICC or CIGRE
