Duration: 6 Months Roles & Responsibilities: This is semi-skilled physical labor requiring the ability to use and operate various tools, vehicles and equipment to maintain turf, plants, shrubs, and ground covers throughout County parks, facilities and right of ways. Classification Distinctions: Work of this class is characterized by a substantial volume of semi-skilled laboring tasks involving the use of hand tools and operation of cars, trucks and various light duty power equipment. Due to the work environment, incumbents may work under limited supervision, in day-to-day maintenance activities. Employees may assist Grounds Maintenance Specialists and Parks & Vegetation Specialists in performing semi-skilled tasks in constructing and maintaining County Parks, Ground and Facilities. Role & Responsibilities: Construct and maintain shrub and turf areas in parks, medians, and green spaces; turf area aeration and thatching; pruning shrubs, trees, and undergrowth; mowing of turf areas in parks and County right-of-ways. Inspects and maintains the County's stormwater facilities. Performs inspection and maintenance of private stormwater facilities in accordance with NPDES requirements. Advises supervisor of problems with the facilities and recommends improvements. Operate a variety of light-duty maintenance equipment necessary to create, maintain, and repair grounds and facilities. Examples of equipment operated include; pickups, 1 to 5 yd dump trucks, front-end loader and a variety of mowers and tractors with attachments such as flail, whirley, hole auger, seeder, thatcher, aerator, plows and disc. Assists Grounds Maintenance Specialists in installing and maintaining structures such as fences, gate barriers, signs, and picnic tables in County parks and green spaces. Assists Parks & Vegetation Control Specialists in installing and maintaining trees, turf and shrub beds and irrigation systems. Maintain facilities such as restrooms, and bathhouses by sweeping floors and scrubbing walls, ceilings and sanitary fixtures, filling paper and soap dispensers; changing light bulbs, and clearing the facilities of litter and garbage. Maintain adequate inventory of supplies, equipment required for ongoing activities and special projects. Assist with crowd control at public events such as rowing regattas by providing traffic control and enforcement of park rules. Respond to the public's questions, complaints and requests for services in a courteous and helpful manner. Perform other duties as may be necessary to maintain and improve the appearance and quality of Clark County grounds. Qualifications: Experience involving parks or grounds maintenance; landscape construction and/or maintenance or any other labor intensive work experience that directly involves the skills required to operate machinery, small tools, power tools, vehicles or equipment. Must possess or be able to obtain at time of hire; a valid motor vehicles operator's license. Must possess or be able to obtain with five (5) months of hire, a Class B Commercial Driver's License. (CDL) with 'N' tanker endorsement. Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. Knowledge & Ability: The function and use of tools and equipment identified above; and safety practices required in ground maintenance functions. Knowledge of principles and methods of ground maintenance, irrigation systems, chemical application materials, horticulture, and stormwater facility maintenance is preferred.
