    Position Summary:

    The Lab Courier's primary responsibility is assisting in the transportation of clinical and anatomical specimens for laboratory testing which includes specific clerical functions.

    Qualifications:

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Valid driver-s license for at least one year ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheets, email and web browsers.Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.Customer/patient focused.Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

    Essential Functions:

  • Key AccountabilityUse and maintenance of UnityPoint Health motor vehicles:Maintains an acceptable motor vehicle record.Ensures the proper use and care of the vehicle in their possession.Relays operation concerns or maintenance needs immediately relays to Manager or Supervisor.Follows established routes and protocols, always demonstrating all Rules of the Road and following all laws.Drives up to 650 miles in both urban and rural settings and in all types of weather conditions.Ensures vehicle is parked in designated areas at the end of the shift.Cleans the vehicle out completely including coolers/supplies/envelopes/trash daily. Parks vehicle with no less than - tank of fuel.

  • Key AccountabilityTransportation of specimens, supplies, and mail:Performs designated routes for specimen transportation with efficiency, maintaining scheduled stops in the allotted time period.Adjusts routes as necessary to meet client needs.Cooperates with co-workers to ensure routes run smoothly during transition from one courier to the next courier.Places utmost importance on customer service for all routes.Verifies specimens are properly labeled prior to transport of specimen to the laboratory; uses good judgement in accepting specimens.Logs all stops and specimens picked up or delivered in the handheld device for Courier/Specimen Tracking. During downtime, paper logs are consistently used to ensure thorough tracking of lab specimens. Transports laboratory- and hospital-related items to clients and departments accurately and promptly.Prepares and delivers supplies as requested by the client through the Customer Service Department. Does not wait for the next route to deliver supplies. Supplies are not left in car for the next courier.

  • Key AccountabilityEffectively communicates information and shares knowledge with peers, lead staff, coordinators and internal and external customers in a timely manner.Completes work within assigned route times.Keeps abreast of changes by reading e-mail messages daily when scheduled to work and attending section meetings.Responds to questions by internal or external customers, peers or coordinators.Notifies customers of delays in collection or transport.Provides timely responses to customer's request and/or takes responsibility for directing the customer to appropriate personnel when necessary.Shares information essential to the efficient operation of department with peers, Coordinator and shift to shift; explains messages and problems clearly without hesitation.

  • Key AccountabilityOther job duties as required or as designated.Follows UnityPoint Health Methodist Proctor safety policies.Properly stores specimens according to protocol.Verifies specimen requirements or handling when unsure/unfamiliar prior to transporting.Ensures specimen integrity during transport by storing specimens at the recommended temperature which may require utilizing ice/dry ice/incubator as needed.Asks for assistance in completing work assignments when necessary.Follows up or refers problems and/or concerns to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.Contributes ideas for improving work processes.
