JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (http://icds.psu.edu/) (ICDS) seeks a talented and goal-oriented student to join our team working closely with our System Administrator. This role is very rewarding as the candidate will perform many tasks within our group to help build their resume’ and continue to learn from some of the best individuals in research and industry.

ICDS works with researchers from more than 70 academic departments from nearly all of Penn State’s academic colleges and campuses, facilitating new collaborations, funding new areas of research, collaborating to overcome computational and data science challenges, building a diverse community of scholars, and providing a robust supercomputer for the Penn State community, called Roar. ICDS seeks to equip researchers with the most cutting-edge computing tools and resources to further their science, and as a part of ICDS, you will be contributing to this goal.

This position will report to the Assistant Direct and has the potential to be performed fully remote or as a hybrid of remote and on-site work.

As a Part-Time IT Consultant Intern, your responsibilities include :

  • Work with ICDS staff to gain experience in supporting faculty and research groups. Enabling them to advance their research by compiling and testing software, as well as troubleshooting issues related to the groups' research.

  • Provide “Tier 1” Help Desk Support – via tickets, phone, zoom, or in-person consultation for our Roar and Roar Collab supercomputers.

  • Build and test scientific software applications on ICDS’ high-performance computing system.

  • Database design, implementation, and migration. Assist ICDS systems administrators in hardware procurement, hardware support, OS builds, software support, etc.

  • Data Management and creating tools to automate and clean up existing staff data.

  • Assist with Project Management and creating tools to better streamline projects.

  • Website development and maintenance

Desired qualifications and skills include (but not required):

  • knowledge and use of Linux/UNIX based systems

  • optimizing and/or developing applications on Unix/Linux-based systems

  • programming in compiled/scripting languages such as C/C++, Fortran, Python, Julia, R, bash

  • using queuing systems and schedulers (Moab, Torque, Slurm)

  • database Experience; MySQL, PostgresSQL, MongoDB

  • excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience

  • experience in providing customer service; preferably in a technical support/help desk environment

  • the ability to learn general concepts and technologies quickly and independently.

Candidates must also have impeccable ethics and integrity with a strong work ethic as well as strong interpersonal and written skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
