JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are seeking an Advanced Phenomenology Department head to join our team in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. We are looking for leaders in the areas of Engineering and Science that are excited about leading multidisciplinary teams in a fast paced research environment. You will lead research efforts and help mentor and develop personnel in this unique problem area that has applications in defense, law enforcement, security, disaster relief, human geography, disaster preparedness, and first response. This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.

You will:

  • Mentor and supervise department personnel to balance project objectives with continuous learning / professional growth.

  • Lead programs and teams, and be part of a highly collaborative leadership team.

  • Lead collaborations with geospatial imagery analysts to understand and automate workflows and improve human processes to advance the discovery and modeling of associations, trends, patterns and system dynamics.

  • Lead the creation of processes and algorithms to transform traditional GEOINT imagery and open source data into spatio-temporal information to better represent the most advanced understanding of world events, systems, and discrete entities.

  • Design and integrate automated geospatial workflows into existing systems with rigorous testing and documentation

  • Grow your career and capabilities, plan and conduct applied research, provide technical guidance and oversight, lead large research efforts, report results, foster trusted relationships with sponsors, and advise on new and evolving technology and techniques.

  • Engage in research efforts ranging from proof-of-concept through integrated production systems.

    Non-tenure faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors’ degree (Master’s degree or PhD preferred) in an Engineering or Science based discipline plus 5 years’ related experience.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Ability to lead diverse teams and themselves be excellent team members, highly adaptable, highly curious, creative, lateral thinkers

  • Excels in highly collaborative leadership teams of peers

  • Significant experience as a Principal Investigator on DoD/IC research programs, and demonstrated leadership capabilities

  • Excellent communication skills, be dependable, responsive, curious, collaborative, and have high interpersonal skill.

  • Relevant experience in a field directly applicable or highly related to Geospatial Sciences, Engineering, or Computer Sciences.

  • Able to adapt and learn new skills, to execute specific research projects, and to meet task deadlines and goals.

  • Computer programming in one or more of the following: Python, R, Java, C++, or Matlab.

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Worked within DoD/IC Analysis or Operational environments

  • Git, GUI development, open source scientific computation, GIS, computer vision, physics modeling, or machine learning tools
