RECEPTIONIST/VETERINARY ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION The veterinary receptionist/assistant answers phones, schedules appointments, receives and checks out client/patients for appointments, assists the veterinarian with office visits and exams, takes care of the everyday needs of pets in the hospital ward and boarding facility, and helps maintain the hospital facility, keeping it neat and clean.
JOB REQUIREMENTS/ SKILLS/ PHYSICAL DEMANDS An employee in this position must: 1. Possess a strong sense of caring for animals. 2. Be in excellent physical condition:
- be able to lift approximately 50 pounds - be able to restrain animals weighing up to 95 pounds - walk dogs weighing up to 95 pounds - work on feet all day 3. Possess a basic competency in computer, math, and speaking/writing/listening skills 4. Be available to work different shifts as necessary.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to: DVM/Owner

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Answer telephone; make appointments, document client communications.
  2. Greet clients arriving for appointments, document client/patient information, place client/pet in exam room.
  3. Check out/invoice clients for services provided.
  4. Assist veterinarian in variety of healthcare duties as required.
  5. Prepare client records; maintain client files.
  6. Clean/maintain reception, examination, and treatment rooms.
  7. Feed and water animals, and monitor for signs of illness, disease, or injury.
  8. Clean and disinfect: cages, work areas, laundry, laboratory equipment, and surgical equipment.
  9. Perform simple in-house laboratory tests, file laboratory reports, and maintain laboratory area.
  10. Exercise hospitalized/boarded pets as needed.
  11. Communicate with and educate clients based on knowledge gained through on-the-job training; answer questions and provide preventative healthcare recommendations.
  12. Maintain strict confidentially regarding clients and patients for whom the practice provides veterinary services.
  13. Maintain professional, cheerful, and helpful attitude with clients and coworkers.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required Previous animal care experience desirable
