Salary Grade: 6\ \ Pay Range\ Hiring Range: \$20.10 \$23.62 Per Hour\ Full Range: \$20.10 \$27.14 Per Hour\ \ Salary offers are based on the candidates equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.\ \ Pima County is recruiting a Range and Agricultural Specialist for its ranch and conservation properties in the Lower San Pedro Zone between the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains northeast of Tucson, AZ. This zone includes A7 Ranch, M Diamond Ranch, Tesoro Nueve Ranch, Six Bar Ranch, and several other conservation properties owned and/or managed by Pima County. This position primarily serves as a liaison between private-sector ranchers on management agreements/contracts with Pima County. The position is responsible for all Essential Functions listed in the position description or as assigned.\ \ The Range and Agricultural Specialist reports to the Range and Agricultural Superintendent in the Range and Conservation Lands Division of the Conservation Lands and Resources Department. This position is part of a team of five staff positions in the Range & Agricultural Section, including the Range & Agricultural Superintendent, three zoned Range and Agricultural Specialists, and a Range and Agricultural Program Coordinator. The duty station will be based in the Lower San Pedro Zone. This position may require living in County housing, preferably in the assigned duty station zone or where County housing is available.

Duties/Responsibilities:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the departments need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.\

  • Maintains effective communication and coordination between private sector ranchers and farmers on contract with Pima County and the Natural Resources (NR) Superintendent of the Range Section;
  • Resides in and maintains historic Ranch and Farm property housing compounds OR reports daily to assigned duty stations;
  • Oversees range, natural resource and infrastructure projects, performs routine property monitoring and reporting, and regularly maintains infrastructure on Ranch, Farm and other open space conservation properties in the assigned zone;
  • Supervises and/or meets contracted crews and County staff at project sites as needed and attends relevant partner organization meetings and events in the assigned zone;
  • Participates in rangeland monitoring in the assigned zone and regularly communicates grazing plan adherence by ranchers on contract with Pima County to theNR Superintendent of the Range Section and the Range and Agricultural Program Coordinator;
  • Manages the Bar V Ranch cattle operation, including creating an annual grazing and breeding plan,annual work plan for infrastructure maintenance and repair, and annual budget withtheNR Superintendent of the Range Section and the Range and Agricultural Program Coordinator;
  • Performs animal husbandry, herd health management and routine veterinary care techniques for County-owned horses and cattle in a semi-arid environment;
  • Assists with implementing the Bar V Ranch Education Program in partnership with Pima County Cooperative Extension (PCCE) 4-H, including providing logistical support, planning and instruction at events and workdays for PCCE 4-H and FFA participants.
