ReportingtotheManager,DentalandOralHealthServices,theDentistwillprovidedentalcaretoTorontoPublicHealth(TPH)eligiblelowincomeclientsenrolledinvariousProvincialandMunicipalsponsoredprogramsthroughtheTPHmanageddentalclinicslocatedthroughouttheCity,andto provide direction, andsupportforthedailyoperationofthedentalclinictheyareassignedto.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Providesinputintothedevelopmentofprogram policies andensuresimplementationofpolicies and procedures in the dental clinic

  • Performsthedutiesofateamleader inaclinical setting,whichincludesensuring effectiveteamwork and efficient flow of patients

  • Obtainscompletemedical history andverifiesandappliesmedicalhistorypriortotreatmentbyconsultingwithfamilymembersandphysicians whennecessary.Refersclientsformedicaltesting if warranted

  • Performscompleteoralexaminations,formulatescomprehensivetreatmentplans,informspatientsandfamiliesoftreatmentplansandobtainsconsentfortreatment;completesdocumentation on Abeldent software

  • Performsabroadrangeofdentaltreatment,i.e.fillings,dentures,extractions,rootcanals,crownsincludinglabfabricatedandstainlesssteel,acidetchprocedures,prefabricatedpost and/orpincorebuildup.Responsible forthefabrication ofdentalprostheticappliances,etc.

  • Mayperformdentalservicesforpatientswithdisabilitiesorbehaviouralproblems

  • Performsemergencydentalprocedures

  • Prescribes antibioticsandadministerslocalanaesthetic

  • Operatesdentalx-raymachineandinterpretsx-rays

  • Monitorsandperformsuniversal precautionprocedures forinfectioncontrolinthedentalofficeas per IPAC and TPH guidelines

  • EducatesthepubliconoralhealthandtheTorontoPublicHealthdentalprogram policiesandguidelines

  • Resolvesconflictwithstaff,clientsandmembersofthepublicwhen necessary

  • Maintainsathoroughknowledgeofandprovidestreatmentundercorrectprograms,i.e.the OntarioSeniorDentalCareProgram(OSDCP),HSO(HealthySmilesOntario),OW(OntarioWorks),HBP(HealthiestBabiesPossible),theInterimFederalHealth(IFH),OntarioDisabilityServicesProgram(ODSP),andtheTorontoPublicHealthdentaltreatmentprograms(paediatric, geriatric, high school)

  • ReferspatientsorthegeneralpublictoappropriatedentalpracticessuchastheUniversityofTorontoFacultyofDentistry,theHospitalforSickChildren,dentalhygienecolleges,dentalspecialists and low cost dental clinics

  • Receivesreferralsfromprivatedentalandmedicalpractitioners

  • Mentorsdentalstudentsfromuniversitiesandcolleges

  • Ensuresthattheclinicisproperlyequippedandmaintained,andmeetssafetyrequirementsfor staff and patients

  • Ensuresmedicalemergencykitsandoxygenareavailableandinastateofreadiness,andthatstaffispreparedtoimplementlifesavingproceduresasnecessary (i.e.administer emergency medication, provideoxygen,performCPR)

  • Ensuresproperx-rayqualityassuranceandsafetyandtheproperdisposalofbiohazardouswaste

  • ProvidesliaisonbetweenthePublicHealthDentalUnit,schoolstaff(principalsandteachers)and parents of patients regarding policies and goals of treatment (i.e. letters from both the department and individual schools.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. GraduateDegree inDentistry fromarecognizeduniversity andhave,orbeeligible foralicense from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.

  2. ConsiderableexperienceworkingasaDentistinadentaloffice.

  3. Experience in the field of removable prosthetics and paediatric and geriatric dentistry.

  4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with staff and clients, including children and parents in a community clinic.

  5. Excellent customer service skills and commitment to the Toronto Public Service.

  6. Post-graduatetrainingorexperienceworkinginaPublicHealthenvironmentwouldbeanasset.

  7. Fluencyinoneormoreofthefollowinglanguagesisanasset:Chinese,Tamil,Hindi,Urdu,Korean,Russian orSpanish(pleaseindicatelanguage skillsonresume).

  8. FamiliaritywithPublicHealthdentalprograms.

  9. AbilitytosupporttheTorontoPublicServicevaluestoensureaculturethatchampionsequity,diversity and respectful workplaces.
