General Summary

This position is responsible for safely assembling, connecting, repairing, installing, and constructing pipe systems for storm drain, sanitary sewer, water (potable and non-potable) and/or dry utilities.

Essential Job Accountabilities

  • Dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
  • Use instruments including but not limited to lasers, grade rods, eye levels and transit levels to set appropriate grade for pipe installation.
  • Locate existing pipes requiring repair or replacement using magnetic or radio indicators.
  • Pothole utilities using hand tools or pothole machine.
  • Grade or level trench bases, using tampering machines or hand tools.
  • Cut pipes to required lengths.
  • Tap and drill holes into pies to introduce auxiliary lines or devise.
  • Align and position pipes to prepare for welding or sealing.
  • Connect multiples pipes and seal joints using mechanical fittings welding equipment, cement, or glue.
  • Assemble and disassemble trench boxes and shoring systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent years of experience

Work Experience

  • Two (2) years of pipelaying experience in underground construction, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safety standards and underground facilities law, preferred.
  • Ability to wear a full body harness and work at heights while tied off.
  • Ability to work, day, swing, and night shifts (occasionally extended hours).
  • Ability to work in constant exposure to outside elements, in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in safety sensitive construction setting, including exposure to moving machinery and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • Ability to squat, crawl, and work in awkward positions/confined spaces.

Physical Demands

  • Physical dexterity, stamina, and excellent hand-eye coordination with ability to: grasp, assemble, and lift objects, stand, sit, and walk for extended periods over uneven surfaces, squat, bend, climb ladders onto equipment or other objects, and potentially lie down.
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling of heavy items weighing up to 50 lbs. or more.
