GE Vernova Lead Design Engineer - System Design in Tampere, Finland

Job Description Summary

We are looking for a Lead Design Engineer to join our FACTS System Design (SD) Team, based in Tampere, Finland. In this position, you will be reporting to FACTS Design Manager.

Main Responsibilities

You would work as a technical design engineer involved in Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) tender and project execution phase. Versatile tasks include e.g. compensation system main configuration, electrical system studies, component inquiries and technical discussions with other stakeholders like sales and project management, other engineering experts, component suppliers, customers, and R&D people.

Our main FACTS System products are Utility SVC and STACOM, but we can also support Series Compensation and Synchronous Condenser projects. We are also involved in the development of new products and technologies in the industry.

This position is essential in FACTS design phase. Majority of the costs and other competence related items are fixed already at the System Design phase. The tasks are reasonably demanding, and it requires certain discipline and time control to manage them properly. A familiarization period from 6 to 12 months is expected to gain skills to manage design works independently.

Basic Qualifications / Requirements

Good theoretical skills in electrical systems and power engineering and ability to apply them in practice would be appreciated. You should have analytical and innovative approach in problem solving and ability to manage multivariable systems.

Matching degree would be M.Sc. or B.Sc. in Power Engineering or in Electrical Engineering. Your major could be e.g. Power Electronics, Power System Analysis, Transmission and Distribution Systems, Power Systems and Markets, Renewable Energy, Smart Grids, Alternative Technologies in Power & Energy. These combined with studies e.g. in Automation, Signal Processing, Control Systems or Programming would give a good background for this job.

Preferred knowledge and skills

Following knowledge and skills would help to succeed in this job:

  • Design experience in HV and MV applications

  • Understanding power system analysis (e.g. system performance analysis and grid code compliance studies)

  • Experience in some simulation tools like PSCAD, DigSilent PowerFactory, PSS/E, ATP, ETAP

  • Good documentation skills

  • Fluent written and oral skills in English - other language skill is benefit

Other desired characteristics

You would have some benefit if you had the following:

  • Working experience in project tendering and execution

  • Understanding compensation systems, FACTS, power electronics, power system controls preferably also real time systems, signal processing, programming

  • Experience in Matlab/Simulink

  • Familiar with international, national and customer specific standards for electrical systems

  • Prioritizing and time management skills, on time delivery

  • Good communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to travel (max. 60 days/yr)
