In Finland Grid Solutions is engineering and manufacturing systems for electrical substations. Our GE Center of Excellence in Tampere delivers reactive power compensators such as Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM), Static Var Compensators (SVC) and STATCOM with energy storage (FACTS FLEX). These are used to control power system voltage and reactive power flow as well as to improve the power system stability and transmission system efficiency. STATCOMs and SVCs are also typically used to improve the integration of renewables to the power system making the future power system more sustainable. Our business is growing rapidly and 95% of the systems manufactured in Tampere are exported globally.

Job Description

You will contribute to the electromechanical and layout design of STATCOM, SVC and FACTS Flex reactive compensation systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Technical ownership and standardization of the STATCOM, SVC & FACTS Flex layout design

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and project team members

  • Promote BIM (building information modelling) approach in layout design with the support from GE Vernova’s international BIM team

  • Participate in technical negotiations with end customers and other stakeholders

  • Support NPI (New Product Introduction) and sales teams in the substation electromechanical and layout designs related topics

  • Perform thermal and short circuit force calculation for rigid busbars and flexible conductors according to international standards (IEC / IEEE)

  • Support installation team locally or remotely considering electromechanical aspects

Desired characteristics

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical primary substation design in the following areas:

  • Layout design

  • HV component dimensioning and selection

  • Busbar thermal and short circuit force calculations

  • Installation

  • Earthing design

  • M.Sc or B.Sc in electrical engineering or other relevant field of engineering

  • Strong understanding of industry standards and regulations governing substation design and operation, mainly IEC & IEEE

  • In-depth knowledge of substation equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, reactors and capacitors

  • Strong experience in civil design requirements for a substation

  • Experience in Autodesk Revit is considered as major advantage

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • English – mandatory

  • Finnish – preferred
