Job Description

Background:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian

crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers

lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or

disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 25 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity

and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure.

Internship Overview:

The intern will assist the Preferred Communities' caseworkers in supporting clients with

the greatest barriers to their self-sufficiency. This is achieved by developing individualized

goals and individualized plans to best assist clients on achieving the goals they set in

collaboration with their casework team. This may include helping orient clients on how to

schedule appointments for medical services, accompanying them to medical appointments,

assisting clients with their employment search, or other administrative support to

caseworkers.

Responsibilities:

• Case Management Assistance

o Assist IRC clients with making appointments to different providers (school,

medical, other social services), provide client training, assist with client

paperwork

• Employment Assistance

o Helping clients fill out job applications, doing outreach with local employers

with clients, helping clients make resumes, attaining new jobs for clients

• Administrative

o Case notes, case file management, receipts, credit card transactions, paperwork,

filling out applications, etc.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Excellent communication and writing skills

• Organized with attention to detail

• Able to work independently and under pressure

• An interest in international issues

• Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting

• Computer literacy

• Must pass a background check ($51.00 fee)

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Must attend IRC volunteer orientation training

• Must commit to at least 15 hours a week
