This position will work with students who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and those with other or multiple accommodation needs that are participating in the EHG annual Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP)--JumpStart. This three (3) week program provides paid work experience, job readiness courses, and skills training to help jump start their career interests.

The right candidate for this job will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all students have world-class educational and work-based learning experiences. The successful candidate will team with a certified interpreter to provide interpreting services to students and staff who are use sign language to communicate.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be actively working towards a degree in Interpreting or a related field, and/or pursing Alabama Interpreter Licensure.
  • Must submit a copy of SLPI documentation with application and/or a sign language sample to Jaime Roop at roop.jaime@aidb.org .
  • Ability to utilize sign language as expressive and receptive communication.
  • Knowledge of the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).

  • Must work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, based on student and program needs.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Driver License and be able to be insured through AIDB.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Interpreter Coordinator in providing interpreting services.
  • Accompany JumpStart students and staff to job placement sites, on field trips, and to other locations as needed.

  • Conduct self and dress in such a manner that sets a good example for the students.

  • Work cooperatively as a team with other staff to best serve the students.

Follow AIDB Communication Policy while working with the students with hearing and/or vision differences.

Deal with emergency situations in a calm and logical manner.
