Google Software Engineering Manager, Child Safety in São Paulo, Brazil

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more of the following programming languages: Go, C++, Java.

  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in managing a software engineering team.

  • Familiarity with software development life-cycle.

  • Ability to manage ambiguous and open-ended problems.

Software Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure engineers are able to optimize theirs. With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

The Child Safety team aims at removing Child Sexual Abuse Imagery (CSAM) online. Partnering closely with Trust and Safety, the Special Victims Investigation Group, and other Google teams, we detect and report CSAM to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Many of these reports lead to rescues every day.

In this role, you will develop cutting-edge technology to combat online abuse and create solutions with tangible, real-world impact. You will help create a safer world by preventing abuse and exploitation of children across Google products.

  • Manage the design development, and deployment of systems for detecting and combating CSAM and other forms of child endangerment, including heuristics, machine learning, data analysis, and metrics-driven technologies.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally, build strong relationships with engineers and product managers across Google to integrate abuse-fighting safeguards into Google products.

  • Prioritize safety and user trust, balance the need for responsible content moderation, ensure user privacy and trust, understand the sensitive nature of this domain.

  • Support external partners, develop solutions and technologies that support NGOs and other organizations dedicated to the prevention of child exploitation, working to extend the reach and effectiveness of these efforts.

  • Lead a team of Software Engineers focused on this critical mission, providing mentorship, guidance, and fostering an environment of innovation.
