Description of Duties:

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, NY, invites applications for a full-time staff assistant serving in the areas Environmental Health, Pre-Health programs, program integration the ESF in the High School Program. The successful candidate will assist with the coordination, supervision, and record keeping of the nationally accredited Environmental Health major, as well as the broad range of Pre-Health activities at ESF. The Assistant Coordinator will have an additional assignment to support the ESF in the High School program, with initial duties focused on Environmental Health courses in the secondary schools. The Assistant Coordinator is a staff member in the Department of Environmental Science and will report directly to the Coordinator of the Environmental Health major and Pre-Health Advisor. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Environmental Health primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with outreach to and recruitment of prospective students

  • Maintain alumni list, including contact information, education beyond ESF, and current and past employment

  • Maintain list of internship opportunities, and assist students in internship placement

  • Maintain documentation from completed internships

  • Assist with advising first and second year students

  • Assist with producing the annual report for Environmental Health

  • Maintain file with course syllabi, sample tests and assignments for all required Environmental Health courses

  • Maintain file with course syllabi for all Environmental Health focus area courses

  • Assist with compiling accreditation documents

  • Assist with supervising Environmental Health club

  • Manage scheduling of Environmental Health Advisory Board meeting, take and maintain notes of meeting

  • Assist with scheduling of guest speakers for EHS132, including handling travel arrangement

Pre Health primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with outreach to and recruitment of prospective students

  • Maintain list of alumni, with information about admission and graduation status of students, as well as which schools they are admitted to and attended

  • Maintain list of required courses for all different pre-health programs, including but not limited to,

  • Medical Degree

  • Physician's Assistant

  • Nurse Practioners

  • Registered Nurse

  • Doctor of Osteopathy

  • Doctor of Dentistry

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

  • Maintain list of hospitals and clinics where prior students have done internships or had shadowing opportunities, and contact persons for each

  • Assist with supervising Pre Health club

ESF in the High School primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Research and develop course content for ESF in the High School courses related to Environmental Health

  • Visit middle and high-school classes engaged in ESF in the High School courses

  • Serve as a guest lecturer for ESF in the HS courses

  • Develop and support summer camp experiences for 7-12th grade students on the ESF campus related to Environmental Health

  • Support on-campus visits from participating ESF in the High School classes during the academic year.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental health, or public health

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in a college setting.

  • Previous experience mentoring and advising students

  • Student organization management

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to function autonomously and as a team member within a collegiate setting

  • Experience using databases and other technology, particularly Microsoft Office software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in environmental science, environmental health, public health, or related area

  • Experience in curriculum design and/or classroom teaching
