SUNY Upstate Medical University Billing Clerk in Syracuse, New York

Job Summary:

The Billing Clerk will insure that Hospital bills are submitted in accordance with Federal, State, third party and Financial Services rules, regulations and procedures.

  1. Responsible to bill primary, secondary and tertiary accounts using various billing systems ensuring claims are submitted timely based on payer guidelines and Federal/State regulations. This includes Attorney General and outside collection accounts. Responsible to review replacement claims in EPIC and for paper remittances, obtain the payer ICN/Internal Claim Number from Chartmaxx and enter on the claim in EPIC.

  2. Responsible for correcting claim edits as required by payer guidelines/contracts and Federal/State regulations in EPIC through the DNB and Claim Edit WQ's ensuring clean claims are sent to SSI and the payers.

  3. Responsible to audit erred claims in EPIC to ensure charges and billing codes are accurate based on contractual/regulatory guidelines. Contact internal/external sources via email, telephone or through WQ's to obtain the necessary information. Complete and attach any forms the payer needs.

  4. Responsible for correction of SSI errors ensuring clean claims are submitted to the payer. Edit demographic information in SSI based on emails received from Registration staff. Verify claim receipt/eligibility when necessary via payer websites to reduce duplicate claim submissions and denials.

  5. Perform all other duties as assigned by Financial Services Management.

  6. Establishes and maintains various internal and external relationships. Internal relationships include registration and ancillary staff; Attorney General's Office, Clinical Data, and other hospital departments. External relationships include various third party payers, hospital patients, attorneys, and physicians.

    Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an office assistant, clerical or keyboarding title allocated to Grade 5 or higher. Open competitive (Non-competitive, NY HELPS) Qualifications:

One year of clerical experience where majority of work time is spent performing mathematical operations, and/or clerical activities related to mathematical operations.

Work Days:

Schedule based on a 40 hour work week. Must be available to work Monday- Friday, 8:00 AM- 4:30 PM.
