Southwestern Community College Student Mental Health Counselor in Sylva, North Carolina

Statement of Primary Purpose To provide counseling support and manage health campaigns (mental, emotional, physical) for SCC students.

Classification Professional, full-time, Exempt

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive Counseling office.
  • Provide direct counseling support to SCC students.
  • Establish community referrals and partnerships for times when required counseling support exceeds the reasonable scope of SCC.
  • Provide leadership for campus health campaigns (mental, emotional, physical) including: bullying, depression, relationships, LGBTQ+, anger management, self-image, stress, anxiety and suicide.
  • Partner with SCCs Human Services club to support substance abuse and recovery campaigns
  • Facilitate supportive workshops to SCC students.
  • Provide training to faculty/staff regarding best practices for personal and emotional student support.
  • Participate in service area committee meetings that discuss/promote mental health issues.
  • Document services provided to students, faculty and staff.
  • Serve on SCCs SAT committee

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member on college committees as appointed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students.

Minimum Qualifications Education Masters Degree in Counseling or Social Work; two-year minimum experience working in the community college system or within the Department of Social Services

Knowledge and Skills Must have working knowledge of the adult learner population. Must be able to function efficiently within a team approach. Have the ability to maintain a student-centered philosophy Must be able to manage several projects simultaneously

Licensing Requirement Required: LCP Preferred: LCSW Valid NC Drivers License.

Working Conditions and Environment Expected visits to SCC locations; extended working hours during peak service periods.
