Description

Amazon.com is looking to hire highly motivated Network Development Engineers for our Network Operations team to drive the stability and sustainability of our next-generation networks and to discover innovative ways to and scale our network as we expand.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of technical leadership and success in driving complex issues to resolution, autonomously and/or collaboratively. The successful candidate will demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of network engineering, concepts and theory. They will have experience managing proactive engineering, network optimization and operational network support for a large-scale service provider or enterprise environment. The successful candidate will be expected to provide high quality network event management for Amazon's worldwide network. As a technical leader, he/she will manage complex stakeholder relationships, both technical and management. A love for working with new technologies and pushing the envelope on existing technology is essential!

  • Provide critical network operations support to Amazon.com customers to diagnose and respond to large-scale events

  • Contribute to operational on-call rotating roster

  • Support and maintain our next generation networks

  • Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes

  • Partner with our broader Technical Operations organization to reduce operational burden

  • Work closely with our Network Engineering & Deployment teams to ensure operational readiness for new deployments

  • Drive standards across the network and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies

  • Participate and drive impact mitigation during large-scale events utilizing an established Event Management process

  • Drive event deep dives for large-scale events, deliver high-quality documentation for the events and drive corrective actions to completion

  • Improve our detection mechanisms by designing and implementing new alerts.

  • Identify and troubleshoot recurring platform issues and ability to effectively engage with mid and senior-level engineering teams for full resolution

  • Create and review documentation and process regarding recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, knowledge transfer material, etc.

  • Troubleshoot interconnectivity issues, including troubleshooting of network device configuration and low level application interaction

  • Identify and drive opportunities to repeatable tasks through creation and maintenance of scripts and tools

  • Effectively contribute towards hiring and developing others in the team.

Key job responsibilities

Network Development Engineers perform high quality network and/or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, internal/external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation.

• Provide critical network operations support to Amazon.com customers to diagnose and respond to large-scale events

• Contribute to operational on-call rotating roster

• Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configurations issues; including necessary low level application interaction, Unix systems, and new age networking software tools.

• Work closely with our automation teams in defining the tools that allow us to scale at higher volume.

• Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.

• Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies.

• Participate and drive impact mitigation during large-scale events utilizing an established Event Management process

• Drive event deep dives for large-scale events, deliver high-quality documentation for the events and drive corrective actions to completion

• Improve our detection mechanisms by designing and implementing new alerts.

• Collaborate with highest tier escalation engineers/resolvers.

• Create and review documentation and process regarding network implementation/deployments, recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, knowledge transfer material, etc.

• Identify and drive opportunities to repeatable tasks through creation and maintenance of scripts and tools

• Effectively contribute towards hiring and developing others in the team.

A day in the life

• Work in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs

• Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.

• Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.

Basic Qualifications

4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience

4+ years of working in a Linux/Unix environment experience

1+ years of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell and/or Perl experience

3+ years experience in a network focused hands-on technical role working with IP routing protocols/technologies and platforms in large scale data center and/or WAN network environments.

4+ years experience developing engineering, deployment, or operations mechanisms to support IP network and/or networking systems.

3+ years experience in a technical on-call capacity, responding to customer impacting events, mitigating and root cause analysis of those events.

Preferred Qualifications

Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, Server Load Balancing, and Network Security architecture and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, Server Load Balancers, Firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS, etc.

Experience with one or more of the following router, server load balancer, and firewall vendor platforms: Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Arista, Brocade, Extreme, Citrix, F5, Fortinet, Palo Alto, etc.

In-depth knowledge of and experience with networking and/or systems technologies

Knowledge of network hardware and packet forwarding architectures.

Experience working in virtualized enterprise networking environments.

Software development/programming

Possess Scripting skills or have desire to learn them; specifically Python, Perl, or Shell (bash, ksh, csh).
